Iginla was on a 20+ goal pace in his last season, never got offered another contract.
Wasn't chasing a record though.

I can see him retiring after the contract is over. However, if he finished his last season with 20 goals and he needs 10 or less then he may sign a 1 year contract and then retire once he has the all-time record. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised to see him retire mid-season after he breaks the record if he isn't performing to his own standards.

I read nothing in that that said he will retire for sure after this contract. "I think yes", But as others have mentioned if hes 10 goals away from the record It'll be tough to not sine for 1 more season.

Your math is off, he would be 50 away and at 38 he looks like a pylon with a stick that does nothing but park himself at the left circle looking for a one timer that he fans on more that anything else, slow as hell, team worst -17.

I’m sure a basement dwelling team would offer him a league min contract just for the ticket/merch sales and attention

My bad, mistype on my part. I was calciulating if he maintained a 20 goal pace in his final 2 years (40) he would have 10 left, which would be 50 after this season, I just typed it out too fast. My bad.

It will be interesting to see if he makes it. His game has declined significantly. And he’s not getting any younger.

His team is also really bad this year, he does have 6 goals in his last 7 games though.

Ovi will retire when he breaks the record. If that takes him 2 years or 5 years, he will do it. With what team? I imagine the Caps. But it's a PR dream to have Ovi break that record in your jersey.
Not gonna lie, if he had a chance to do so in a Flames jersey on a 1 year deal, you bet your butt I'd sign him. Just like signing Jagr

That's a bummer to imagine OV leaving the NHL without breaking the record. Hopefully he stays on even if he has to sign on for another season or two. I've loved this guy since he joined the NHL, along with Sid, and love watching both guys play.

Hobbling his way over the record is even more of a bummer. If he does it at all I hope its because he regains a bit of form next season.

He had a slumping 32 and 38 goals in consecutive years.
If he can get to 50 he has a chance, but this is a pretty significant drop off.
Maybe he can reel off a 30 goal season. I don’t see how you can’t be motivated breaking a record many thought could never be broken.

Even though he is having an off year he still does lead his team in scoring.

I'm quite surprised he's only played for the Capitals. I feel like he's a party guy and would have wanted to go to New York or Miami over Washington DC. You gotta commend him for his loyalty to the team
So, at this point, if he breaks the record he's doing it as a Capital.

Coming out of his entry level he got a 13yr-$124m contract, during that time he married a swiss/russian babe and had 2 kids.

Its weird, but I get the impression that Ovechkin is an intensely likable individual.
Right now, Ownership and Management seem to be on the page of:
"We won our Cup. Now get OV his record. Then we get back to work."
In the meantime, they dont really seem serious about competing. That being said, when you have insanely rich owners they can afford to treat their teams as Toys.

Apart from NYC, DC probably has the highest concentration of Russians in the US. Big community there.
