Frederic meets need, age and keeping the team competitive profile Conroy mentioned they’re looking for in a trade. Hanifin extended for a package with Frederic as the main piece would make me super happy.

Tampa is far from the only place he can be traded.

He’s a 26 year old centre with 85 pts in 253 games…as the main piece? Nah. Heck nah.
Sure, 31 pts on 55 games this year but nah.

A quick google search showed me the only deal the Flames have retained salary on was David Rittich in 2021.
I believe the hold up here is not necessarily the Flames willingness to retain (IMO really unlikely) but the other teams willingness to pay the required price for them to do so.
All of the rumoured players to be traded are on quite favourable deals right now, so I, for one, completely understand Conroy "sticking to his guns" and hope he continues to do so.
Each players next deal is the rights holders problem, with Markstrom the farthest out. I am expecting excellent returns on all even without retaining salary.

Bruins are probably my least favourite trade partner. Them and Tampa. Just not much of interest.

It would have to be multiple picks, including a first rounder. Their prospect bases are nothing special.

My dream is a signed Noah Hanifin, Blake Coleman and a 3rd for Wyatt Johnson, Logan Stankoven and a 1st. Losing Coleman would suck, but a) I could see Dallas bringing the hometown boy home, b) we need a young centre in the worst way, c) Stankoven and a 1st further kickstarts/plays into our rebuild, and d) the 3rd from Calgary in a way for Dallas to recoup a pick in the trade, softening the blow of the loss of the first.
A boy can dream.

Flames keep scouting the bruins because they are trying to find something of value worth trading for but not seeing it. I hope.

Would be great, but I don't think Dallas can afford that even if we retain on both guys

For contending teams that is the equivalent of retaining salary and the Flames did it 6 times over the past 9 years (one of the higher numbers in the NHL). I suspect that as the Flames transition to a rebuild that organizational enthusiasm to do the equivalent of retention during contending years will be transferred to doing it on retention in a rebuilding team.

The list I looked at, at Capfriendly.com went back to 2014. I personally don't remember The Flames ever retaining salary otherwise, but could totally be wrong on that.
Retaining salary in a trade to me is totally different from the expense of buying out a contract and In no way the equivalent. IMO there is a significant difference in paying someone not to play anymore, thanks to agreements within the salary cap vs. paying them to play somewhere else.
Again, all of these players current deals are good value contracts and should be seen as such, the rest is ifs and buts and not necessarily reality.

The something is that a few years ago when he was launching Daily Face-off, he broke nearly every single UFA signing and trade. Doesn't take a genius to figure out that he told agents he'd carry their water in perpetuity if he got a one time monopoly on breaking news to establish his business.
Now you have players with preferred destinations without first round picks in Tanev to Vancouver and Hanifin to Tampa or Boston... And so he does what he can to repress value.
I also think doom and gloom sells in Calgary and as for Edmonton, we all know how bread gets buttered up there. If anyone has listened to their DFO show, he essentially hired fans to do that broadcast. That plays well for ownership and their fans... Because they're morons.

I like Hanifin and wouldn’t mind keeping him. He is also prone to big blunders and it always seems like he’s ready to take that next step to be a #1 dman but has never found that extra gear.
Maybe some teams see the same thing and are offering based on that.

Dallas has serious cap problems, and Stankoven and Johnson are the solution.
You have basically used up all of their cap for next season and left them with a 14 man roster.
