Yeah, when it's too hot (like maxed out on the spicy scale), it does seem a little silly since, like you said, it completely takes away from the taste.

I can agree that with most meals cooked, having too much spicy ruins the meal. However, I have had meals where if the dish was spicier, the taste was better.

This is true for many Malaysian and Thai meals.

But I also think you need to have some ability to consume these spicy foods. If you're not used to eating spicy, of course it will ruin your meal.

When I spend more time wiping my dripping nose and eyes, it is a sign I have gone too far. Not to mention, if it hurts going down, it's gonna hurt comin' out.

I met a lady who grew up in Trinidad and Tobago when I was young, and she was spooning this homemade 'relish' on saltine crackers, like I would spoon ante pasto. She offered me some, so I took her up on it. I dug in with the spoon, and luckily she stopped me. She more or less dipped the very corner of a cracker, so that is was barely moist from the relish. That alone burnt the hide off of my tongue so that my tastebuds were shot for the next two days.

At the Red Devil I was also beaten up badly by a sauce called 'Spank my a$$ and call me Sally.'

I believe a few weeks ago I had suicide wings which had a Scoville unit rating of 350,000 units as per the menu. I'm East Indian, so inheritantly, can handle hot, but one was enough as the heat was moving around my mouth the more water I had. We went with about 30 people, almost everyone had some, and couldn't handle it. Funny thing is the white guy who you'd think can't handle it had about 5 - 5 more than anyone else. We asked the owner what the record was, and an amazing 65 in half an hour was what was said which was amazing considering what 1 did do you. I wouldn't want to be the second visitor to that guys washroom the next morning.

I ate some authentic habenero peppers in Mexico this winter. They're considered by many as the hottest pepper. I like hotl, spicey food, but that habenero sauce was too hot for me. I could eat it without any problem, but it didn't have any flavour ... other than blister-your-tongue hot. I like a little flavour with my heat.

That's your mistake right there. The compound that causes the spiciness is insoluble in water. Milk works best as the compound actually dissolves in it.

It's a way to easily drink lots of beer quickly.

But also you build up a tolerance for it and after awhile you can taste something other then your mouth being on fire.

I have eaten chicken wings coated in 2 cm of habanero concentrate sauce. The resteraunt in New Jersey would give you a prize if you could 6 wings in a row. I got to 5. I messed up when I got the sauce on the napkin then wiped my face. The sauce got in my eyes and I had to give up. My stomach was on fire until the next morning.

I have heard that the chemical your body releases to try and cool the capsaicin is addicitive and your body begins to crave it the moe you eat hot stuff. Might be an urban myth?

Miss Vickie's Jalapeno chips aren't spicy.

Yeah, that has been posted in the front page. Crazy that the pepper can be that potent.

btw, you posted a wiki article. What website are you referring to that sells stuff?

yeah, a buddy of mine brought some of that back to. i couldn't eat it. i tried, but i couldn't. just too much heat. and there really wasn't much flavour. one of my teachers mustn't have any tastebuds left the way he eats hot food. he has 100% capsaisin concentrate (what makes the peppers hot) for which he had to sign a waiver when he purchased it. i don't know how he can handle it. as for me...i like hot, but not too hot...little more than franks is about all i really care for. i can handle more, but i don't really see the point in having to deal with that the next day

I love spicy foods as it adds to the flavour.

It's great when I have a cold. All that spicy food helps to clear up my sinuses.

Love hot wings and spicy/peking chinese food.

I like it pretty hot. I laugh sometimes when restaurants advertise spicy, when they really mean spicy for most white people.

Authentic East Indian food seems to mess me up though.
