It can be, if you're building reasonable alternatives.

Punishing car traffic with taxes and lack of expansion leading to congestion is useless if we aren't focused on building reasonable alternatives.

The problem is those reasonable alternatives necessitate not sucking at large capital intensive infrastructure projects, as well as changing the way we build cities.

Simple solutions attempted to solve to complex problems seem to be our bane.

https://london.ctvnews.ca/gst-on-car...%20Alex%20Ruff.

A recent report from the Parliamentary budget officer has made it clear how much the GST on the Carbon Tax is costing Canadians.

This year alone, the GST on Canada’s Carbon Tax will cost taxpayers $486 million. Over the next eight years, the number reaches $6 billion.

Meh, GST is too low anyway. Should never have been cut.

Possibly, but taxing the tax, on what are often necessary items for most people is a severe tax on those nearest the poverty line. It’s an easy fix and I can’t understand why they are insistent on this one.

Fair enough, up the GST, and exempt it from the carbon tax.

That is an insane amount of money. I’m sure new passport technology and other things makes it a relatively expensive endeavour- but- $284 million?!?

Just seems like the government is extremely wasteful with money.

If anyone thought the NDP were any less crazy than the wingiest wing nuts in the CPC, just read this.

It’s a dumb useless bill, but as someone who would like to lean conservative if they weren’t crazy, here’s the difference, the wing nuts in the NDP would like to ban fossil fuel ads, which is pointless. The wing nuts in the CPC would like to ban abortion or restrict trans rights which is harmful. The difference is stark.

People near the poverty line don't pay that much carbon tax when counting the rebate.

Well they will pay the carbon tax and then get the refund, which seems pretty inefficient. In the meantime they are still paying the gst on that tax. Yes they get a gst refund too, just not sure why it all need to be that way.

This is incorrect. You get the refund first, THEN the tax comes in. For example, we are all going to get an increased rebate amount on April 15, even though the tax only increases on April 1. The rebate would cover April 1 to July 1, meaning the rebates comes in before 85% of the actual spend.

As to your question as to why it has to be this way, rebates are an accepted way to turn a generally regressive tax policy (which appears to be your concern) into one where it's progressive - especially when the rebates are universal like the carbon tax rebate.

But why charge gst in the carbon tax on your gas bill at all? Just doesn’t make any sense to me.

Also I’m pretty certain we started paying the carbon tax before any refunds were issued…maybe I’m wrong.

You would've been correct if you were referring to a time between January 2020and March 2020 and only those 3 months ever. This is because we started getting charged the carbon tax in January 1, 2020 but we didn't get our first rebate until April 2020. However, the April 2020 amount was for April-June 2020 (ie. being refunded for charges yet to happen), as well as an additional amount to correct for the Jan 1 to March 30 amount. This correction only lasted for a year, and in subsequent years post 2021 (ie. 3 full years now), the calculation where you are basically pre-rebated for the entire amount before you started being charged carbon tax holds true.

And fair enough I don't really care whether GST gets charged on carbon tax or not. You can go either way with that - sure the government should just take it out and save me like $10 a year or less. It just doesn't move the needle for me.

$10 per guy per month should cover some of the “consulting” costs. Seems about right.

I mean, I would sooner not pay it, you know, to line someone’s pocket…

338 Seat Projection: CPC 208 LPC 64 BQ 38 NDP 26

https://338canada.com/federal.htm

It seems more and more Liberal supporters are seeing the Conservatives as a better choice than the NDP. I don't think the NDP's focus on identity politics is paying off.

Is it common to receive a refund before spending something rather than after?

The complainers ruined the Carbon tax in advance. You used to get the full year of Carbon tax when you filled your taxes in March. So 9 of 12 months in advance. But because people are stupid and were claiming that they didn’t get carbon tax rebates they decided to split in into 4 payments. Those payments start in April each year so we no longer get carbon tax rebated in advance.

As to the gas bill when you buy a furnace or do windows or insulation project or make the decision to buy a heat pump the carbon tax improves the payout rate of these investments.
