No worries, the fact that they played him yesterday showed there was no trade.
Were there discussions? Definitely
Were there offers back and forth? Maybe
Will there be a trade? Maybe
But there was never any trade that they could accept yesterday. For all we know the Devils could have offered to take Markstrom with full retention for a 5th in 2029.

As long as Conroy gets back solid value like he did with Lindholm I doubt this is going to be am excessively long rebuild.
We already have some very solid peices at important positions and need to find depth and a star or two (which we should through the draft in view of the way the season is going).
Keep the course, get back maximum value, find a solid U-25 centre (hello Mercer) and draft well.

I don’t see his value getting higher moving forward after the sell off

Not if he decided he wants to wait til summer before moving.
Its HIS decision.....no one elses.

“If the rumours are true” is a gigantic “if”.
Trade likely broke down because they could not agree on the return.

So did the Devils talks get shelved? Anyone heard anything?
We are going to get fleeced by the Bruins as well, not pleased with Hanifin.

Finally happy we are rebuilding...I think flames management is overly optimistic about being able to compete in 3 years...this is going to take time, 5-7 years, but finally happy we have a direction

My understanding is that there was disagreement in trade talks between the teams over Calgary retaining salary on Markstrom’s contract, which runs for another two and a half years at $6 million per. And tied to that, I think there was disagreement on what the cost, asset-wise, should be just for salary retention if Calgary did agree to it, in addition to the other parts of a proposed trade.

Doesn’t sound like it was as close as some think. Oh well lots of runway left before march 8th.

If we make the playoffs in the next 5 seasons (including this one), I'll be surprised.
This will take time since we need to find star players; the hardest part.

I mean, they gambled on a rookie being their starter last year and won a round. The greatest predictor of future behaviour is past behaviour.
If you take out Mercer they start to get pretty thin down the middle, especially with McLeod gone and Jack Hughes not really able to play centre successfully in their new system.

Hey NJ, trade us for Markstrom or we’ll trade him to Philly.

NJD continue to be a pathetic Mickey Mouse team. I hope the miss the playoffs, all their kids flunk out and they have to rebuild again.

It is good to be optimistic, but Calgary has few players currently which likely make up the core of a playoff team.
Anderson will be gone by then unless signed to an unappealing 8 year contract.
If Mercer was available the trade likely would be done.
Calgary is likely looking at a very long rebuild absent some sensational drafting. It can happen, as the Flames have should some good ability there.
Whether Wolf develops into a very good goalie is pretty important to this rebuild.

Looking to sell their pending UFA's but would be open to taking on players with term remaining, I imagine. No rentals, though, is the word coming out of there.

And yet all of us will still be here, still supporting the team. I have actively tried to stop following or caring about the Flames but am a sad, weak person that cannot. I ultimately love them too much. I mean I kinda hate some things about them, and yet, love them too. It’s like being in an abusive relationship.
So if they take their time to go find the next Iginla, I’m totally AOK with it because I think you need those elite level stars to win cups. And in my life when I’m not like 3 years old and can’t appreciate or remember it I want these idiots to win a cup. And for this city. It would be amazing.
So they need to go through some tough times now and face the music. I think strategically capitalizing on Markstrom’s good season just makes so much sense. Sell high, do something different for a change.
I can see why the trade may not have happened yet, if Conroy thinks waiting ups the pressure or that he can squeeze more value by negotiating or holding off. But ultimately? I hope they move the player and just extract as much futures as possible here.

If the rumours about the Flames not willing to retain are true, I'm curious as to why. We're rebuilding so having some dead cap isn't an issue for a couple of years, retaining 3m is worth a lot in a trade. Is it possible ownership won't allow retention? That would seem odd, since they have approved buyouts several times in the past.
