I think a claim makes sense for the Flames, in order to play for the Wranglers. I doubt any team would claim him from the Flames when they put him back on waivers for the purposes of sending him down.

From Phillips' perspective, come back home, play with the Wranglers and get a playoff run in, and then re-evaluate in the summer.

Even if the year is kind of a disappointment for Phillips personally it has to be pretty cool to be able to say "I played with Ovechkin, Crosby, and scored a goal against my home town team that drafted me"

I hope Phillips does well in Pittsburgh. Should be a cool experience for him. If it turns out he can't hack it there I would love to see him succeed Sutter as Wranglers captain down the line. Has been and would continue to be a great ambassador for that team.

The mid-20 age AHL all-stars/NHL tweeners can make $350k+ for a short period, and still have a shot at an injury recall to make NHL $ for a period

Depends where in Europe and, of course, how good the player is.

I would guess the average guy that goes over will earn 150-200K a year.

Great money for playing a game obviously.

The bigger benefit though is lifestyle, again depending on where you land.

I've known more than a few that went over when it was clear their shot at big time in NA was more or less over. Most fell in love with the pace of life more than anything. The demands are much lower in most spots, they are taken care of really well by the club, and the travel is a fraction of what it is in most instances.

Its a really good alternative to the grind of NA pro hockey.

From the looks of his stat card he wasn’t a liability defensively 5v5 and had no opportunity with special teams which isn’t a surprise. It’ll be interesting to see how the Pens utilize him if he’s able to get into the lineup.

also, European clubs pay for your automobile, your housing, your taxes, your insurance, AND your airline tickets. Thus you should only spend about 10 to 15% of what you earn, allowing you to bank the rest!
