Hell, the only time Kipper made the second round, he started that year as an AHLer.

There's no real rhyme or reason to goalie success. Guys having Vezina type years can flop hard in the playoffs (just look at Markstrom in 2022 vs Edmonton) and guys who lost their starter position due to weak play can suddenly catch fire in the playoffs (eg Holtby in 2018 or MAF in 2017).

Even on an in-season basis, look up North. Stuart Skinner started the season as the worst goalie in the NHL, and since that rocky start has gone 20-5.

Build a strong group of skaters, starting with the center position, and then take a damn chance on some goalies in their 20s and just see how it shakes out. Don't let some predetermined role of "designated veteran starter" dictate the position
Yeah, it’s why I am always skeptical of the people who say the Flames fan base will stand behind them regardless of results. I think people will be quick to turn once they start losing. Doesn’t really matter, it is part of the process either way

The strategy is pretty clear to me now.

2023/24: Trade Tanev, Markstrom, and Hanifin or Rasmus. Draft Tij Iginla.
2024/25: Tank to keep our top-10 pick.
2025/26: Tank like never before and draft Joe Iginla.
2026/27: Have a more competitive hockey team. Wolf comes into his own.
2027/28: New arena opens and we sign Cale Makar.

It's actually pretty simple now. Since we'll be getting FLA's pick next year, and it will be higher than the Flames' pick.

If the Flames pick is in the top 10 next year MTL gets FLA's pick.

Otherwise MTL gets CGY's(the better) pick.

So the Flames have a big incentive to stay out of the 10-16 picks next year.

Right, and we're getting FLA's 2025 pick instead of FLA's 2026 pick, because FLA's 2025 pick will not be a lottery pick. Because we get FLA's 2025 pick unless its a lottery pick. Do I have that right?

Hopefully I look like an idiot for saying this but starting to look like a Markstrom trade is not as imminent as it appeared 18 hours ago. Past noon on the east coast and no announcement or even rumours of an announcement.

No it's tied to the condition they have on the 2024 pick.
But since they are in a playoff spot, that pick goes to Philly. If it didn't then Philly would get the 2025 pick and bump the owed Flames pick to 2026.

FLA first traded their 1st rounder in 2024 to PHI in the Giroux(?) trade and had it top 10 protected. PHi would've gotten the 2025 pick in the case FLA bottomed out this year which would've sent the 2026 pick to the Flames.

Based on standings there's essentially no chance that it happens.

Have to take a moment to thank Getbak for tirelessly explaining these transaction rules over the years. Truly appreciated.

Just my opinion. I'm told something is going down but no details as to which player(s).

I expect they’ll be the team to overpay for him in free agency

You and Nelson are both correct. It's a condition in the Huberdeau trade that if Florida's pick is top 10, it transfers to 2026.

If the Flames sell Markstrom they are going to stink for many years. I would put money on bottoming out for the next 2-3, getting a couple of top 5 picks and then gradually start getting better.

Now that I think about it, I don't think I've seen Mike Commodore and Sec214 in the same room.

Yeah, but the next layer is the 2025 pick could also bump to 2026
