I'd be pretty pissed if I was Mercer and included in this trade. Moving from a team that is just entering a window to a team that has publicly stated they are looking to 2027 to be competitive.

F that.

Aww life must be tough for a 22 year old millionaire who hasn't paid his dues in the NHL yet.

Somehow I think he'll be fine with coming to Calgary if he is a part of the trade. This is the perfect situation for a guy like him, he'll be given plenty of opportunity.

Yeah, he would instantly move up a line or two and probably get more powerplay time. A move to Calgary could really help him in the career earnings department. He is only 22 and has a lot of time to chase cups.

I've been staring at this depth chart for a couple days - https://www.capfriendly.com/teams/devils. Just look at that forward situation and you can figure out why they might use Mercer and/or Holtz to land a goaltender. They are disgustingly deep with forward talent and they can't afford to pay another

The flip side of that is opportunity. And Mercer would get more top 6 opportunity with the Flames than he will with the Devils.

Whomever we get in return, I'll trust that our scouts have watched them play.

I already ordered my Mercer jersey (#99). What's the hold up?

If Mercer is included this may be one of the worst kept secret deals in hockey.

Also Devils fans are in disbelief that he's the return (think they are paying too much).

Devils fans must be bananas. Fans in general probably overvalue their own guys but the way his season has gone so far, some could argue it’s not enough for a signed goaltender playing his best. If I were on the opposite end I’d call it a fair tradeoff. Both have risks but for New Jersey the incremental benefit of adding a legit goaltender far outweighs yet another young guy who doesn’t have quite the same ceiling as their other young stars.

This is what Lebrun had to say this morning in the Athletic

“Despite a failed attempt recently at reeling in Jacob Markstrom from Calgary, I’m told the New Jersey Devils will continue to try to find a way to make a deal work with the Flames before March 8. That doesn’t mean they’ll be able to get it done, of course.

My understanding is that there was disagreement in trade talks between the teams over Calgary retaining salary on Markstrom’s contract, which runs for another two and a half years at $6 million per. And tied to that, I think there was disagreement on what the cost, asset-wise, should be just for salary retention if Calgary did agree to it, in addition to the other parts of a proposed trade.”

Not that this has anything to do with anything really but I suspect LeBrun wrote that last night or yesterday afternoon and who knows what movement has occurred even since the end of the game.

Sounds like his old article, from a couple days ago recycled.
