DK is the resident NJ fan. Be nice so that we can get an honest reaction of the Devil's fanbase after the trade!

To LA:
Markstrom
To Calgary:
Dubois
Byfield
I would do that. I don't think that LA does - they aren't a poor team that can't afford that buyout, but the dead cap might be too much for them. Getting Markstrom while getting out of that dead cap space is not enough to rationalize trading Byfield away, however.
Markstrom
for
Dubois
Turcotte
Clarke
That seems more palatable for the Kings. I think the dead cap space is worth it.
I think Markstrom is worth a 1st plus a team's 2nd or 3rd best prospect at this point. I see him playing as an elite goaltender, and these are not traded at all while they are elite. So is the addition of Markstrom plus the avoidance of the buyout penalty worth losing Turcotte and Clarke? I think it would be for LA. The buyout is a total of over 15 million bucks (which LA would probably do) and results in over a million in dead cap space (varying - highest is 3.82 million) through the 2037-38 season!
https://www.capfriendly.com/buyout-c...rre-luc-dubois
I don't think that buyout cap-hit will justify Byfield, unless Markstrom takes LA all the way to the cup. I do think it will justify Clarke and Turcotte. I think I would do that given where I am if I am LA. Flames need high-end talent, so either the Dubois gamble pays off and he finally wakes up in Calgary, or he gets bought out, but the Flames also have 2 promising young players (though one is a fading young star due to injuries, but definitely a talented young star). I think depending on how you view Clarke, I think the Flames actually need more back. That's a very long time to have dead money on the books, plus it is 15 million bucks.
Tough one. Interesting trade that I have seen brought up here in various forms. I am usually not one to really participate in valuations and hypothetical trades much, but this one I do find interesting as there is so much potential, as well as moving parts and 'what ifs'.

I don't know if I could name many players I'd want less than Dubois. That guy has been a disaster everywhere he's played.

I'm not surprised.
Markstrom is the only single piece available that can feasibly turn their season around.
I'd prefer Mercer over Holtz as the young player because of the position, but I'll take talent and an additional first at the end of the day.
Hopefully the cap dump is for a shorter term than Markstrom had remaining, making it easier to stomach. I gather the Flames will do whatever they can to not have to retain (but again, why not if it guarantees a better package?)
Boy I'm up late lol.

If Conroy pulls off a Mercer (or equivalent value) for Markstom trade he will immediately become a legendary GM in my books.
Feels refreshing to see that there is actually a plan in place and that the team is looking towards the future.
LFG!!!!

However, it appears that they have a new target, as The Fourth Period reported in their latest Trade Watch List that the Bolts are linked to Calgary Flames star defenseman Noah Hanifin.

1. Noah Hanifin, LD - Calgary Flames
Hanifin held off signing an eight-year extension with Calgary at the start of the season worth a reported $7.5M per season. The Flames reapproached him around the New Year, but no deal yet. Teams know what he wants long-term, which might not help trade negotiations from Calgary’s perspective, but if the Flames can’t convince him to stay, they’ll look to move him.

2. Chris Tanev, RD - Calgary Flames
Tanev can become a UFA this summer and is another player the Flames may have to move instead of risk losing for nothing in July. There is plenty of interest and that will increase leading up to the deadline, and the expectation is he will be moved. Some teams are wondering if he’ll sign an extension with them, as well.

11. Jacob Markstrom, G - Calgary Flames
Teams have called and the Flames are listening. Markstrom has a full NMC and Calgary will not approach the veteran goalie about accepting a trade until they receive an offer they deem acceptable. He is willing to explore a move, and as TFP’s David Pagnotta reported on Feb. 9, he would be willing to waive for the Devils. We’ll see how this unfolds.

Fully prepared to get blue balled again but I hope something happens. Works going to be slow today either way.

a little surprised the champs are not involved in these rumors for D. I think Tanev would be a great fit on the Knights

If the Devils were hoping to have Markstrom for the stadium series game I would think the deal would have to go down today. I would also say the stadium series game against the Flyers is a must win for Jersey if they want to get into a divisional playoff spot.

Oh this is interesting. Didn't realize that it was an outdoor game.
Could Markstrom start 2 outdoor games in 1 season?

If Markstrom was traded today who would be back up for wolf for tonight’s game? Still not convinced flames will trade Markstrom since they want to be competitive.

I wouldn't want to see him either and that's why I would just buy him out, his contract is buyout friendly. Which is why LA would never trade him for Huberdeau.
