They were actually not bad in December – 7-4-2.
After beating San Jose on December 27, they had a record of 20-7-4. Then the wheels came off. Since that game, they are 4-9-6.
But you're right, it's definitely not just one game.

We're legitimately spoiled by the seller's market Conroy has created right now. What a perfect storm not just by how Conroy's handled it but also with not many other great assets being shopped on the market so far this season. After the last couple years it feels good to have some stuff seem like it's going in the right direction.
I'd be more than fine with the rumored Markstrom package even if the prospect/player isn't Holtz or Mercer. Just think how voodoo goalies are, if you said last year we'd get any package of that magnitude you'd get rightfully sh*t on.
If the player is Siegenthaler, he can play 20 mins a night and at least replace some of the defensive D that Tanev brought. The prospect being a bit further down the team rankings is fine if we're getting a 1st and a 2nd as well like rumored.
And that's if the other contacted teams or Devils don't beat that offer at this point.
What an interesting season it's been so far!

Turcotte + 2024 1st + 2025 2nd + copley + lizotte
For Markstrom (1.75 million retained)
Works cap wise.
Center prospect + picks + RFA NHLer + 1 year dump

Yeah I meant to say Jan 1, my mistake. Four wins in 19 games is ridiculously bad

Turcotte gets very highly overrated due to his draft pedigree. Guessing ends up being a 3C. His offensive ability is overrated and he can’t stay healthy. He is a 2nd round pick value at this point.

Question wasn't to me but ...
I'd prefer the 1st round pick, roster player and prospect model over two "B" prospects.
Now the 1st round pick could turn out worse than a "B" prospect, in fact it likely equals more often than not.
But the 1st has additional value (in my mind) in moving up, or moving for established players that are better than a "B" prospect. Plus I see the Flames amateur scouting as an organizational plus skill, so maybe they can turn that into a "A-" or "B+" prospect.

Wonder if Vladar going down in IR is possibly the reason or part of the reason the trade with NJ hasn’t gone down…. I see no way Vanicek is coming back in it, and that leaves Wolf alone for the Flames Vladar can come off IR today I think? Maybe the real reason Fitz blew a gasket… wanted Marky now! Not in a week. Makes some sense of the Flames actually asked Marky to waive too. I know we have great insight from SEC216, just wondering if this might be part of it too.

After reading some articles on the Markstrom trade, there had to be something else to this trade other than fitz not liking conroy calling other teams. Doesn’t make sense from devils side when they were going to get a great goalie with term and some sort of retention. One of the articles said it’s highly doubtful that they would revisit the trade. Has to be more to it than emotions of thinking devils had a done deal.

There didn’t have to be anything else. It’s perfectly reasonable to believe that the Devils reacted in a way that didn’t make good sense or are trying to play hardball themselves. They’re all people, after all, so I don’t know why we would think a lack of reason or an increase in emotion during negotiation is some foreign concept.

Yeah, it really depends on which way you want to run with the limited data. One fork is Fitzgerald blew a gasket because Conroy called some other teams during negotiations. I don’t really see it unless Conroy ground him down, made it sound like a deal was done, and then shopped around again.
The other fork is that retention killed a deal that was close to done. Personally I’ll believe the retention thing when we see it.

Turcottes early devlopment has been derailed by injuries and now he finds himself without a clear spot to progress up the depth chart.
The still very young (same draft class as Pelletier) and has alot of nice tools.
It's really difficult to get a bona-fide blue chipper with no red flags in a trade.
Seems exactly like the type of player Conroy has been targetting.
