If they’re acquiring Hanifin they’re using him as a rental. So I wouldn’t go crazy with the valuation.
I’d rather we sell them separately. Maybe Tanev going the other way with Hamilton out but Hanifin imo could fetch more.

Nah. He replies by text because the tractor is too loud to be talking on the phone.

Oh great, here we go with the trades that almost happened, and the big return the Flames almost got BS.

With Jack Hughes calling out his goalies last night maybe the GM gives it another run for Markstrom

There’s still lots of time to make this happen.
Maybe indicating Conroy wants to show ownership the goodwill this sort of move would have among the media and the fans.

We need as many good young players as we can get, we can always swing more trades later if we have too many wingers.
|
Not sure about now, but there were rumours the Flames wanted Mercer at the draft.

Flames were high on Mercer and he went to the devils one pick ahead. They then traded back multiple times and selected Zary.

Conroy hasn’t pulled that one too much yet. This isn’t the classic Tre bridesmaid situation. I’m more annoyed it fell apart over retention

That isn't what I said at all. I said only Arizona has consistently kept in touch about Hanifin regularly since the start of the year. I didn't say anything about a sign and trade to Arizona. I did say they might be one of the teams on his NTC and might not want to sign there due to the uncertainty of the teams future.

My comment had nothing to do with Conroy, it just sucks hearing about trades you want to happen for the long term health of the franchise "almost" happening but "fell apart".

Oh I know. Just a different feel for me on this one. Tre got tiresome with always being second place. Conroy seems to act when he wants to. I’ll be more annoyed if it happens again.

I'm now fairly convinced that the deal fell through because we didn't want to retain. Reading between the lines of what Seravalli said with Steinberg just now, the two sides got as close as you can without crossing the finish line, meaning the return was agreed upon - this is not Conroy holding out for a better return. The fact that NJ were the ones frustrated that the deal did not go through indicates this wasn't them trying to pull a fast one on Craig.
If that's the case, I'm not surprised since our ownership has a history of not retaining money, but it's incredibly frustrating.
I guess I'll wait and see if we actually trade Markstrom and what the return will be, but missing out on Holtz + could be huge.

Hour 1 of Flames talk is up on podcast platforms now.
Steinberg echoing that he’s known NJD has been in pursuit of Markstrom since November and that this deal was almost done and Marky did waive.
Steinberg’s talk re: 2027 is a personal belief of his that he’s confident in. It’s about “hitting stride for 2027” to open the new building with a good team.
Conroy’s not messing around in getting younger.

I wouldn't bother guessing or getting frustrated about what happened re owners getting involved and retention based on a couple gossip mongers speculating. As others have said this could be as simple as a deal that was close and not being able to agree on a price or value for salary retention.

But didn't you say that Conroy wasn't even shopping Hanifin until this past week?

Not sure where you are getting your info? They were both drafted in 2020 and are only 3 months apart and Mercer has 122pts in 213 games and Holtz has 29 pts in 79 career games. The only thing correct is their stats are similar this year.

I expect due to how long Hanifin has strung this along that he will end up traded but he just as easily could decide to sign the contract, I am not Hanifin so I have no idea. I do believe he legitimately can't decide, loves the team and the organization, likes Calgary, but is not sure where the team is heading as far as being competitive and he is an American. We know the boarder shutdown during Covid was not easy on guys who couldn't get back across the boarder, I think that scares some guys. Sorry I don't have anything concrete on what direction he is going.

It was this post here, where you seemed to have info that the Flames hadn't been shopping Hanifin until this ultimatum, when most had info that Conroy had been speaking with teams on trades all season long, even as early as last summer.
