Fleury blew kisses at the opposing bench after a goal and no one did anything. The code my ass.
The other team then scored to go ahead and that guy blew kisses at Fleury.

Fleury used to take a lot of punishment on the ice, no doubt because of his antics.

No one did anything on that occasion, nor when he overcelebrated.
People took runs at Fleury when he played dirty.

32 Thoughts nailed it…. Few posters should take a listen.
Even touches on “the code” (refers to it as tribalism) and how if you cant comprehend it you likely don’t understand sport and sportsmanship.

You're insistence on something that is purely an opinion is absurd.

Sorry, you don’t understand sport if you wouldn’t smash a dude in the mouth for shooting the puck at the net… like a man.

Then the code is stupid because it’s super-arbitrary.

It’s 20+ minutes on the topic….
But generally that Rielly had to respond with something for the hot dog empty netter… but shouldnt have cross checked him in the face.
Also goes into detail how the stick rode up the hot dogs arm so should only be 2-4 games max.
And ends on it being great for their rivalry.

So what 98% of people have been saying, even in this topic. Glad we got that over with. Reilly should respond to a legal showboating play with something other than a crosscheck to the head.

The actual label of "code" isnt something that players would normally refer it too, and is moreso a media driven term, but there are just things you dont do that will draw retribution.
This wasn't about scoring on the empty net, it was about "showing up" the team and a player responding.
Call it stupid if you like, but the fact is....its a real thing.
Smashing someone in the face is way over the line to be sure and will be punished, but there was always going to be a reaction to doing that.

Sportsnet's article on the Leaf's side encapsulates all that is wrong with this, imo.
Ryan Reaves:
Quote:
|
"You would hope," Reaves went on. "But these young kids these days are playing a different brand of hockey than I'm used to. The code's changed a little bit. The game's changed a lot. And it's unfortunate that a young kid like that can get away with something like that, and then one of our best players is gonna get suspended for it. Make hockey violent again — get that tattooed on me."
|
Quote:
|
Behind the scenes, the Leafs are incensed that Rielly's cross-check has risen to in-person scrutiny, and this flex by the Senators on social media wasn't exactly received with a laugh:
|
Keefe:
Quote:
|
"But at the same time, there's a history also of events that happened in Toronto and with the Leafs that get more attention, more hype, that tend to lead to something such as this. So, to that end, not surprised," said Keefe, who also objected to Jason Spezza's six-gamer in 2021.

I honestly think Keefe should be fined for almost enticing it. This kind of junk needs to be removed from the game. That'll never happen if players are being praised for their actions. The slap shot may be against the code, but cross checking the guy in the face is by no means the appropriate response.
On Sportsnet and TSN they have been making light of it all day, almost being giddy with enjoyment over seeing Greig cross checked in the face. Meanwhile on the American networks they (appropriately) condemned it. Greig could have easily been concussed on the play, or severely hurt. Go ahead and face wash the guy, or drop your gloves... but this was going too far.
Throw the book at him, and try and find ways to rid the game of this "eye for an eye" code mentality.

What I don't understand is, why is there no "code" against cross-checking guy in the face?

EF was out to lunch on this from the start, we already covered it Saturday night. They are Leaf/Oiler fanboys, owned by Rogers for Christ sake.
