I'm not sure there should be a code, but if there is a "code" then there are two ways to handle it.
1. You take a number, you bide your time over the game or the season(s) (which would have to be the case in this situation given it was end of game) and you wait until the opportunity presents itself to go at him hard and legally.
2. You decide to forgo the rules, and go after him. When you make that choice, to up hold the "code", you also make the choice to eat your medicine for breaking the rules of the game whatever that might be, penalty, suspension, fine. And if you choose to go extreme, and up hold the code with dangerous plays, you accept that the punishment will be severe.
That's how this should work. There is no, there should be no suspension, or penalty for act XXX that is clearly against the rules because of the "code". Vigilante justice comes with a price, and that's my biggest issue with some of this debate. People don't think there should be a price to be paid for breaking the rules if they feel it was warranted. That's not a world any sport can live in, how would you draw that line, it's completely subjective. Leafs can decide they want to be proud of Riley, that's fine, but also can't complain about the price he needs to pay for his actions.

Doesn't really matter if a few online posters don't think there should be a "code" for what is acceptable on the ice... because there is. The players that play the game have decided this.
Obviously the code is always changing (and getting less violent) but I don't see it going away for stunts like ripping a slap shot on an empty net breakaway against your provincial rival on HNIC.
And before the "crosscheck to the face" is referenced yet again... YOU CAN'T CROSSCHECK SOMEONE IN THE FACE. CROSSCHECKING IN THE FACE IS VERY BAD, MM-KAY. RIELLY IS GETTING SUSPENDED.

The only thing he did wrong was not riding his stick back to center after scoring.

3. You and your teammates simply mock the "offender" for being a showboat doofus and trying to look cool. He's 21 - he'll take it to heart I bet.

I'm I the only one who think Reilly's actions were not as big of a deal as people are making it out to be. Obviously, he deserves a suspension. However, it's a just a case of a player losing their cool. The cross-check while bad, was one of those checks where it's across the whole body, and one hand slides up into the face/head. No one was injured:
Quite honestly, this happens somewhat frequently in scrums and even in my beer league. Sure it's comparable to the Hunter play, but no one was hurt this time. And yes, the effects of a play do matter. Hunter was also a repeat offending goon, that the NHL wanted to make an example of.
3-5 games seems about right here.

I thought Anderson's suspension was too much personally. I do think Reilly's was worse, mainly because the goal was already scored. It wasn't about trying to prevent a goal. The time of the game shouldn't have been a factor IMO, just the unclean hit itself.

I don't think so. Those head shots at speed have a far greater chance of injury. In fact, Laine was injured on the play.
Rielly needs a suspension. I just don't see how this is worth double digits, unless the league is going to make an example of him. But are after the play attacks really that common and rampant right now?

I think it needs to be 5 minimum.
Hrudey's 5-7 prediction sounded about right.
Bieksa saying 2 was a joke.

The code isn't the code anymore. Now its justification for idiot goons to take cheap shots and then have people talk about defending the code.
Remember that Kassian who was nothing but a spot picking, coward who liked to jump people from behind or take head shots was wildly saluted by the Oiler fans and media as some mythical defender of the code. Its bull####.
You want to see a defender of the code, look at Gordie Howe, a player took a cheap shot at his boy and dropped the gloves, and Gordie stepped in and lifted the guy up by his nostrils and said that's enough.
All that Reilly showed was that he was a petulant child, he literally broke the code with a cheap shot where he tried to go after the head of a player that had just scored.
You want him to defend the code? Then he waits for the faceoff and squares up. Or he waits for the next game and swings his purse.
The code, none of these players know what the code even means anymore, but they sure like to blather about it to justify their stupidity.

That's the problem is the code is whatever it is moment. I have no idea if guys have ever taken a slap shot into an empty net before because no one cares.

Considering what Anderson got for his punishment, during the game in an actual play, a fine would be a complete joke. This was idiotic, after the play and deserves north of 5 games.
Reilly did need to respond (I actually love the slapshot on the empty net - nothing wrong with stirring the pot), but he acted like a doofus with the crosscheck to the face.
All that was needed was a bit of a body check into the boards and maybe a facewash and message is sent.

I don't care about all of the fluff around what lead to the crosscheck. There was a crosscheck to the face after the game was over. To me, this is worse than what Perron did so it should be on par suspension wise if not a little longer. But...I can also see this being 4-5 just because it is the Leafs.

Elliott found two occurrences of in-person hearings being judged as less than 6 games. One was a 4 game suspension, one was a 5 game suspension.
