Easily the best summary I've seen. Completely agree.
I've talked with friends, I thought it was hilarious to slapper into an empty net...thats a high-risk move versus just casually directing it, you miss that slapper and you look like a jackass.
Jumping him after? Yeah...thats coming.
Cross-check to the head? Way, way too far.
You want to mug him in the corner or drop the gloves and take your 5 and a game, thats fine. Relatively harmless.
But ambushing him with your stick to the mind is not.

There are technical fouls for excessive dunking or hanging onto the rim too enthusiastically. Also, in the NBA teams no longer score once the team behind quits and no longer fouls.
As I mentioned before, Greig could have just skated the puck into the corner, the game was over as the clock was ticking down under 10 seconds. Toronto was not getting the puck back.
Weegar should have received a two-hander to his head for his hat trick goal. Should have fired it into the corner, instead. That or limply shoot it toward the net.

Going in circles now. If it’s showboating then a response is justified, but it wasn’t so a response is stupid. And if this is personality, then we need to redefine personality because this is lame AF.
It’s either showboating or it’s a nothing play. But there’s no scenario where this adds anything to the enjoyment of the product.
It's a nothing play. The fact that it generates such a reaction both in the moment and in the day to follow is embarrassing.
Sure, slapping the puck into an empty net does not show personality. But the point is that a pathetic unwritten code precluding a slap shot into an empty net validates the notion that hockey is kinda lame and most hockey players are feckless bores.
Maybe. Other sports have deemed certain things penalties. The NHL has not so it's up to the teams to decide.
The cross check is wrong and he's going to get a big suspension. But if he had ragdolled Greig, what would we be saying today? Would we still be calling Rielly a baby?
I'd guess that the NBA rule against breaking the glass backboard is because they want to prevent the delay in the game created by having to replace it and not due to grandstanding. I no longer watch the NBA, though, so maybe I'm wrong.
Anyone who thinks a slapper into an empty net adds flavour or entertainment to hockey has a wildly different interpretation of excitement at nhl games than I do.
The resulting brawl maybe, sure. But a slap shot into an empty net increased your entertainment value? Seriously? Comparing it to a fancy dunk in basketball is asinine.
You can argue all day long with the unwritten code about respect is stupid, but I don’t know how anyone makes the argument that this adds flavour and personality to hockey. It’s not a skill play. It’s not exciting. It’s something any crappy fourth liner could do.
You make it sound like it's not a big deal. Funny that.

I think the NHL in general needs to get rid of guys “jumping” someone for non-penalties. It’s stupid and makes everyone who does it look like a dumbass.
Guy show boats? OK. Play better. Run up the score next game, do something “hockey” and not try to drop the gloves because someone shot a puck a wittle too hawd at youw spesuw net. Same with clean hits. Don’t be a baby and jump guys every time they lay a clean hit, hit back.
At least running the goalie or blowing up a star player I can understand. I get it. “It’s our job to protect _____ so we can’t let him get away with it!” Sure.
But if Rielly wanted to protect his previous empty net from someone scoring on it with a slap shot maybe he should have been a better defenceman. I don’t think we gain anything as fans by just accepting that Greig gets jumped for that. We look as stupid as Rielly.
Still, the speed of his slapshot exceeding the 70 mph maximum code limit means there has to be retribution. If he had just laid off a tad on that shot and all this never happens.
Or have they reduced the speed limit in the code lately?

Correct. And it's not really about the backboard anymore (they just make them stronger now), it's to avoid the rim getting bent or knocked off level, which is a finicky thing to fix. And you are allowed to hang if it's necessary for your safety (players below you or your momentum would make you land weird) - they just don't want you to do a pull-up as it is a bit show boaty and probably puts a bit of extra force on the rim
Taking a slap shot into an empty net is showboating but Jake Walman doing a griddy celly after winning a game with a penalty shot isn't? Why do grown men have such an indiscernible line that determines when their feelings get hurt?

I got curious about the Flames-Ducks game from 2015 that GirlySports posted earlier and what the penalties were from it.
It doesn't relate to the game yesterday because Rielly's response was much more extreme than anything the Flames did in that game, but I spent a lot of time typing this up, so I spoilered it for anyone who isn't interested.
There was no supplemental discipline for anyone involved.
A misconduct is basically a catch-all penalty for bad behaviour, so it's possible Kesler did something in the scrum to warrant the additional penalty, but I suspect it was because of shooting the puck after the buzzer. I'm sure I've seen players get similar penalties for the same thing.
Checking the NHL Rule Book for Misconducts:
Quote:
75.4(iii) Any player who persists in any course of conduct (including threatening or abusive language or gestures or similar actions) designed to incite an opponent into incurring a penalty.
That creates a kind of circular logic, where if you do something knowing it is likely to draw a certain reaction from the other team, you should get a Misconduct when it draws that reaction. Throughout NHL history, showboating on an empty net has led to a specific reaction from the other team. Even though it's not specifically against the rules, because showboating on a empty net should be expected to lead to the other team taking a penalty against you, it essentially makes it against the rules.
I'd say that spraying the opposing goalie with snow falls under the same umbrella. It's rare to see someone get a penalty for it, but if the ref wants to get things under control, it's their discretion.

BTW, here are the GT and PGT for that game. Not a lot of sympathy for Kesler:

NHL needs to install speed bumps once goalie has vacated the net...

Weegar scored an empty net goal with 20 seconds left. He probably should have just skated the puck into the corner because the Isles were not going to get the puck back, skate down the ice, score, win a draw and skate the puck back down the ice and score in 15 seconds (assuming Weegar could have kept possession for 5 seconds).

How does one know if it is a penalty-worthy in real time? The refs don't even know. Players sometimes get suspended later for plays the ref never called a penalty on.

15-20 seconds is a lot. Stefan missed that empty net with 11 seconds left.
