Markstrom may be less amenable to a trade in the off-season.

One thing that might be a hang up is that you have a guy who has been your best player, and you have to pay part of his salary to move him to another team. If you look at recent or even past goaltender trades they might return a conditional first and later round pick. Chances are New Jersey is thinking vanacek, Michael McLeoud and a rth for him with 50% retained should get the deal done.
If the Flames want to move the contract they likely need to eat part of it. But for a guy like Edwards he might wonder why he has to pay part of a guy who can be a teams best players wage to upgrade to a conditional second round pick in a trade.

They still need to sell tickets. Both at the AHL and NHL level.
Icing 60% of this years AHL team with a bunch of "short term UFA's" and 3 vets up front will see attendance levels drop too the young guns days. Rightfully so.
This is still a business and business decisions have to be a large part of the equation.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have made nearly $250M in extra playoff revenue over the Sid and Geno era.
You’d think Murray Warbucks would want that more than an extra $5m or whatever.

If it was run like a business it would have moved to Houston (or similar large US market) a long time ago.

To me, a team retooling, and still battling for a playoff spot doesn’t even consider moving a guy who is a big part of the reason they are still in the fight, yet it appears they have had discussions. Just my thinking, but I don’t think there are any discussions during the season unless the player is interested in change.

I was referring to the 10,000 foot view psychoanalysis on Marky in the post I quoted.
Francis didn't ask if the Lindholm trade changed Marky's outlook on the team and its prospects. So yeah, I am not going to guess or make #### up.
That's kind of my point. We have as much in common with Marky as we do with Harvey the Hound. So why speculate and imagine things?
So far he says no one has asked him to waive, and that's good enough for me.
As for the Friedman report, legit discussions that stopped in their tracks. I.e. NJD made an offer and Conroy said no way, and didn't take that to Marky to consider. Typical Friedman garbage.

I dunno. They've been doing that all season, and this product is 100x more fun to watch than the turd at the beginning of the season. Even if it wasn't winning more.

They got Sid in a lottery that every team was eligible to win

Now tell me what it looks like with no Markstrom, Tanev, Coleman, Mangiapane, or Hanifin this year.....Still "100X more fun"?....because that is the suggestion.
People would be staying away in droves.
Yes changes were/are needed. No question and I fully agree the team looks refreshed.
This club will suffer greatly when they lose their whole second pairing in the next couple weeks as it is....now add in moving the Vezina level G, top goal scorer and 88 on top that.
They will be replaced by a small unproven NHL guy in net, Matt Coronato who has shown he is not yet ready, and....im not even sure...Ben Jones maybe? And on the back end Kuznetsov and Solovyov who also arent ready?
Then ask your customers to lay down anywhere from 4K to 100's of K for tickets next year.
Would you pay to watch that?
Never mind the message you are sending your current group by sending the guys that helped get them here....away.
Its just really bad business all around.

Was talking about past seasons, and whether or not they would scuttle the retool they are in if they thought they could finish 8th.
They wouldn't. They're not.

I don't think Conroy would trade all those guys for futures anyway, so I don't think it's possible for anyone to say what the team would look like. Sharangovich and Kuzmenko have been players returned thus far, not exactly inserting a Ben Jones.

My take is Markstrom is interested in changing locales and he has made this known privately. He’s playing like a guy who’s been told, “if you’re looking to move on you need to create a demand for your services.” If this is the case he has fulfilled his obligation, but if he isn’t moved I wouldn’t expect him to replicate this season next year, or maybe even post deadline.
|
Why would everyone report the player loves it here including the player himself if he wanted out? He isn't playing well because he wants out, he is playing well because he is a good goalie who wants to help his teammates make the playoffs. He is playing well because Backlund chose to stay here to try and win. He is playing well because the players like eachother and believe in this group. It has nothing to do with wanting to move.

And who says the market is hot for Markstrom? Sure a lot of teams want a 1a) goalie but how many who are in contention can afford the assets to give up and also take the chance he stays hot when he moves scross country? Ok the Devils are, but would he waive to go there this year? They may not even make playoffs.
There would be probably a dozen teams interested in the offseason if he keeps up this play, and would move peices around in the offseason to get him, more so than now, and the Flames would have a mini bidding war for him, if they and him choose.
And I take him at his word that he's really not wanting to go anywhere.
UFAs sure, as they can be rentals. Markstrom you're fundamentally changing your team dynamic up for a couple years and I don't see that happening much at trade deadlines.

Also, as the father of a very small child, he'd certainly find it a lot less disruptive to move in the off-season if he has to move at all.

Markstroms a very niche market. He's a security blanket for a team on the upswing. He's a massive homerun for a contender like the AVs.

You can do the math with any organization that regularly makes it to the second round and beyond over the last 20 years.
Theyre always a cap team - I just don’t see why they wouldn’t spend $20M less for a few seasons and do things the right way.
