Playoffs are still a longshot.

If Tanev and Hanifin get moved for nothing but futures (not really Conroy's style thus far) playoffs are an even longer shot. In fact, still not certain they do get moved.

Lots of interconnected pieces. If those two get traded, and if the best return is futures, moving Markstrom now makes a lot more sense IMO.

Once Tanev and Hanafin get moved, the playoffs will be an extremely remote possibility. This organization needs to look past this season as this is not a cup contending roster. There’s nothing to hold on for.

A top 10 pick is more valuable than a first round exit.

Meh, this team gives me 14/15 vibes sometimes. Would be funny if they actually made it to the second round or more. Very doubtful.

Not sure Edwards would agree. In fact I’m pretty positive he would take a 4 game sweep over a top 10 pick just for the two home games. There’s a reason this organization hasn’t had a sniff of a Stanley Cup since he took over. He’s running as a business while it’s a hobby for the majority of the billionaire owners who want a cup for their trophy case.

A top 10 pick is worth way more than getting swept in the first round, that likely doesn't happen though. This team isn't making the playoffs, so a top 10 pick is worth more than an early teens pick the Flames are used to.

Trade Markstrom for a haul.

Trade Hanifin for a haul.

Trade Tanev and Mangiapane to the Leafs for reeves, first and a prospect.

Try to convince Coleman and Dallas that they're a perfect fit and make it happen.

Finish with high picks this year and next then start to improve.

I love that leafs trade. As long as that prospect is a Cowan or Lilagrin (sp).

I want Reaves to protect our young guys and goon up the oilers and canucks

Reaves can't play anymore, and no dance partners left in the league. Waste of a roster spot.

I don't think that's fair.

The man has to understand long term value of a first round pick.

Organizationally I don't think they see it as a four game sweep is the difference. They see it as this team is good enough that if we get in we could win the whole thing.

You still have to ice a team, and one that people will show up to watch.

You can't just take half of the wranglers roster. They have to ice a team too.

It's a nice pipe dream though.

His poor play (IMO) aside, he'd end up pushing someone off the 4L as he wouldn't play higher up here. And cost twice as much to do it. And again, who would he be deterring, especially on the road where teams can line match against him?

I doubt there is any validity to this but I would get behind this return (Vanacek+Holtz) but if there is salary retention draft picks need to be part of the return as well. No retention I would offer up Vladar or Vanacek for a pick 50% retention and run the other with Wolf.

How did that face value work out for Zadorov and the room? Most guys are professional and handle their business in a way that respects their current team, but it’s not a reach to think seeing one of these reasons he signed here packing his bags has impacted Markstrom’s thoughts about his future.

To me, a team retooling, and still battling for a playoff spot doesn’t even consider moving a guy who is a big part of the reason they are still in the fight, yet it appears they have had discussions. Just my thinking, but I don’t think there are any discussions during the season unless the player is interested in change.

I don't see a world where the Flames get more than a recent 7th overall pick and some salary to adjust the cap implications for a 34 year old goalie with 2.3 years remaining on his $6M AAV contract.

Holtz is just arriving right now. It'd be an excellent time to get him.

You have to look at the established trade values of goalies. They don't get moved often in situations like this.

Ryan Miller effectively returned a 1st and 3rd. You're in that ballpark, and Holtz > 1st + 3rd.

The conversation around "well then the Flames won't trade Markstrom"...I mean, why not? The organization is better off with a move like that. Conroy has been actively clearing the path for a youth movement, and this aligns - while adding probably our best young player (excluding Zary, but I'd put Holtz about on par with Zary). The Flames have to clear the path for Wolf, they have to - and giving Vladar more work could also be massively beneficial. This would return the best value while doing that.

Trading Markstrom now for a reasonable return (say value of a 1st + 2nd) is proactive management. Adding a Holtz (or a Mercer) is the closest thing Conroy will get to a 'fast forward' button he'll find on building this team back up.

Bring up some wranglers, sign some UFA'S to short term deals that you can hopefully flip, trade with teams that need cqp space.

Icing a team isn't a problem and needs to stop being an excuse.

This thread is a great example of how people truly subscribe to the notion of “what have you done for me lately”. Even at the start of this season fans were clamoring for Campbell+Oilers 1st for Markstrom and now we do not think 22 year old players doing well and picked in the first round is not enough. Markstrom is 34 so getting Holtz or Mercer is a no brainer to me

It’s a total straw man argument.

When was the last time a team forfeited a game because they couldn’t ice a team? Some people live in irrational fear of this.

I don’t believe they think that way. They would have to delusional to think that and I do not believe that Conroy or anyone else associated with the team has delusions of grandeur like this. They know what this team is and it is why Conroy is making the moves he is. This team has a short expiration date in the post-season. There just isn’t enough talent on the roster.
