Yeah, no way Conroy trades Markstrom unless it’s for a stupidly awful overpayment, or we go ahead and lose the next 6 straight

That's the beauty of the Markstrom situation. He's rebuilt his value thankfully, but his NMC and 2+ years of term left make it so Conroy can buy his time.
However, if he continues to light it up this season and is in Vezina contention again, I really hope Conroy cashes in on his value at the draft or in the summer.
Markstrom has a history of inconsistency throughout his career, and he was so bad last year that I don't think he could have been moved without a sweetener being attached. Then you end up with the Monahan situation all over again.
Couple that with Wolf dominating the AHL for the third straight season, IMO it'd be the perfect time to cash in those chips.

Trading Markstrom or not trading Markstrom should be dictated by a "plan" not a reaction to a small stretch of a season.
If there's a trade where the Flames can pull the equivalent of two 1st round picks? You do it. It's not giving up on this season, it's giving Wolf and Vladar a chance to develop and own the crease during a meaningful stretch while also bolstering the future. I'd even do it for a 1st + 2nd.
Big picture I think the chance for Vladar and Wolf to play this meaningful hockey is important.

The Devils aren't ready to compete yet, they would be foolish to trade off assets as a bubble team. That being said, Markstrom for an unprotected 1st please.

It is going to take more than that.

Agreed, I’m thinking a 2024 unprotected 1st and a top prospect. Or Conroy doesn’t do it.

The Flames have been dialed in on Mercer for a while. I think the ask is their 2024 1st (top 10 protected ) and Mercer. From the sounds of it that ask was too much for NJ.

This is the ultimate question.
We might make the playoffs. I sincerely doubt we do any damage.
If you can get a King's ransom for Markstrom?
Nothing against him, but why wouldnt you take it? You have a goaltending problem. You've got to make room and if someone says to you:
"I'll fix it. And I'll pay you to fix it."
Take what they offer you...then squeeze them for more.

The only first round picks that would have more value then Mercer at this time are top ten picks, New Jersey can't provide this nor could any team that is acquiring Markstrom.
Mercer is a top 6 player today and is still improving. He is also reliable defensively, versatile (can play centre and wing) and plays a "Huska" style game. He would fit in like a glove here.
Furthermore, I don't see any scenario where Calgary would prefer a late first over Dawson Mercer. Lottery tickets are cool and all but Mercer brings the best of both worlds as he still has lots of potential and is young.

It sort of is… it’s asset management, and these assets go through huge swings in production and ability, and eventually hit a wall and are worth nothing in a trade.

Doesn’t San Jose own NJ’s 2024 pick from the Meier trade? Or what were the conditions?

If the Flames are asking for Mercer and a first, wonder if the Devils as asking for 50% retention, and that’s the hang up.
If the flames can pry Mercer away from the Devils, which would be great, wonder if Mercer and a second, or even a third for Markstrom with $1-2M retained might work.
In any event seems like a long shot Markstrom is moved prior to the deadline.
The Vladar injury is also complicating things. I was starting to think moving Vladar at 50% retained was the more likely move. Good backups at ~$1M are valuable.

I would take the deal 1 for 1 without hesitation.
22 year old C/RW who is already a top 6er vs 34 year old #1 having and amazing year (may get Vezina votes).
Markstom is a great goalie but Mercer could be a core piece here for a decade.

I agree. Mercer would be an awesome addition for the Flames but that could be a pipe dream. Young players of that calibre are really, if ever moved for players of Markstrom’s age regardless of their performance.
The Devils could very well not have Mercer on the table at all and are only offering picks and lesser prospects.

I just don't see the fit for the flames, Mercer is another smallish winger, they need a Hughes or Nemec, a defenceman who can develop and be impactful when the team is ready to compete in 3-5 years from now. Mercer is also an RFA, what type of money does he want?
It would make sense if new jersey offered him ( not everyone is an untouchable) with a draft pick. Obviously the GM's are talking and can't agree on compensation, I don't think Calgary wants Mercer at this time
