It's not that he shot it too hard. By winding up for a slap shot 5 feet out from the net like that, he is basically showing off to the defenseman behind him that he is so far behind, that he can take that extra step and not worry about it. It's showing off, plain and simple, just to make Reilly look bad. Reilly knows they effed up and the coach was going to make a point of it, and Greig decided to make a spectacle of it in front of 20,000 people.

didn't Perron get 5 games this season for a cross-check to the head? And that was more "during play" as well.

Gotta believe Reilly gets AT LEAST 5 games for that...

I honestly just thought Reilly was being an idiot baby, I didn’t know there were fans that were the same way.
So there no line anyone can cross. Can do whatever they want.

Greig should be penalized. By not doing so, the NHL causes these problems where Rielly has to address it (yes he went too far).

Why do you think other leagues have taunting penalties for trash talking, hanging onto the rim or taking off your jersey? Are they run by idiot babies? It may seem silly to some but it prevents things like what happened today.

Greig's slap shot was unnecessary, but that doesn't excuse Reilly one bit ... throw the book at him. Won't happen, because he's a Leaf and the DoPS is a joke, of course.

Bieksa: no big deal blah blah blah... I like Reilly show of passion: blah..blah blah

You can score on an empty net however you want too. I like Grieg show of passion!

Some absolutely embarrassing takes here my god.

The hunter hit was a blindside yes, but to me Riellys was much more aggressive and dangerous being a crosscheck to the head. Not sure how you could possibly justify less games after rewatching the hunter footage.

Nothing like the Hunter hit. Greig saw him coming and should have expected it. The Hunter hit was a blind side sucker punch during a normal goal celebration after a normal goal.

I remember this happening during the San Jose series in 2004. I think it was Simon who tuned the guy up after he hot dogged on an empty netter. Simon didn't miss a game.

I have absolutely nothing to add except this is the most caveman, stupid, immature ####ing post I've seen about hockey in a long time that wasn't made with sarcasm. Jesus Christ

And 19 people liked it? That's even worse

Botterill crapped all over Mayers for standing up for a play earlier in the year when Perfetti was targeted in the faceoff when he didn’t even do the play that elicited the retaliation and she wasn’t wrong, it’s that type of garbage that doesn’t serve the game anything nowadays. But she almost tries to justify the response of Reilly here, Bieksa too, and to me it’s because it’s the beloved Lesfs, it would be no different if this was an Oilers/Nurse play in question. It makes it hard to watch the between periods panels because they are so clearly biased it’s not even funny. It was a dumb and young play by Grieg there but that was a direct target of the head, after the whistle and very late in the game. It looks worse than Andersson’s on Liane from earlier this year so good on Hrudey for calling a spade a spade here. He’ll get the 2 games the majority of the panel was suggesting which is bunk.

Penalizing players for how hard they shoot the puck in the net might be the dumbest hockey-related idea I’ve ever heard, and I don’t say that lightly.

It’s silly that there needs to be penalties against this sort of thing (again, not sure how “taking off your jersey” and “shooting the puck a little bit harder” are the same, but OK) but it should be pretty clear it’s solely to protect players from doing anything that is going to aggravate meathead idiot babies and their fans. I’m not sure why you’re asking if they are, because of course they are.

Reilly doesn’t have to address it because there’s nothing to address. Reilly and the people suggesting Greig had something coming have a loser mentality.

I’m guessing you think Markstrom should have been run for trying to score on the empty net. Goalies aren’t supposed to score, that’s hot dogging.

Call the rules, not the "unwritten" rules, and suspend Reilly for a game.

Or have a speed gun equipped on every net for every game and call a 2 minute unsportsmanlike penalty for any empty net goal resulting from a shot exceeding 20 mph, a 5 minute + game misconduct for any empty net goal resulting from a shot exceeding 50 mph, and a no-goal call on any empty net goal resulting from a shot exceeding 75 mph.

The NHL and NHLPA , and many fans just can't help themselves , fans love a little showboating and rubbing it in your rivals nose
It creates intensity and a bit of hatred.

We love the physicality and violence of hockey as much as the skill

The rivalries in hockey are better than any other sport (in game, Footy fans are ####ing crazy)

BUT they are so stuck with this BS idea of "The Code" and "honor" in the game that they lose sight of what will bring in new fans.

Let us not forget forget how "the code" gets broken and how it contradicts itself constantly

Sooner rather than later we are going to have another shot to the head with a tragic outcome. Apparently we learned nothing from the Bertuzzi incident

Are you suggesting that Greig should not be penalized (presumably suspended now that the game is done) for scoring a goal in an inappropriate manner? I say throw it into the rulebook alongside “flashing the glove hand too high when you actually caught the puck 18 inches off the ice”. No need for it and it creates hard feelings with the player who was trying to score.

Very bizarre take. The modern player "practices their celly" but a guy shooting the puck hard into an empty net is a bridge too far and un sportsman like? WTF???

I think it's pretty safe to say the next time flames get an empty net goal the refs and Toronto will spend 5 mins reviewing, deem it was hit too hard and waive it off. For reasons.

I'm fine with the slapshot into the net as it's a difficult season and they're a rival. Gotta get up for those games. I'm fine with Reilly responding as he's showing up your team and rubbing in a painful loss. Should've drilled him and started throwing haymakers. A cross check to the teeth is gutless and deserves a suspension.
