If Markstrom had scored, I wonder if he would have spent the final couple minutes of the game trying to get into a fight to be the first goalie with a Gordie Howe hat trick?
Yeah, I feel like he was the first coach in the last 10 years or so to pull their goalie with more than 3 minutes left in the game while he was coaching the Avs. Ever since he did it, more coaches do as well now.
Definitely more coaches pulling earlier these days, and advanced game modelling says it should happen even earlier yet.
But Roy didn't pull his goalie down 2 goals on the PP with 6 minutes left. That really should be a no brainer for anyone.
To Vancouver:
Elias Lindholm
To Calgary:
Andrei Kuzmenko
Hunter Brzustewicz
Joni Jurmo
2024 first-round pick
A conditional 2024 fourth-round pick
Jonathan Huberdeau
Also leaves us with Tkachuk for Weegar ; Schwindt and a first - also fine

Had he scored Roy might have jumped the boards and fought him

Said it before, the Flames last steak ended vs the Leafs, a game they had in control for a while.
Pospisil gets hurt that game.
Then vs Oilers, another good game, and the fluke goal against was decider.
The the Blues, in full control but lose that at the end.
Deflating, especially three in a row where they play as good or better then opponent and lose.
Those games go the other way and probably don't stink it up vs CLB. Now 4 more wins.
Tldr, last 11 games, with the way they played, they could be 10-1, and the 1 L was a result of 3 crushing losses after having leads in those games.

Ehhh....I actually think from a different school of thought on that one.
If you're DESPERATE...okay. But generally the benefit of the powerplay is space. If you pull the goalie you negate that advantage, sure, you have more people to pass to...more traffic, that advantage depends on the makeup of your team.
And also...that ability to ice the puck to an empty net? Thats playing with fire.

Yeah, good points. The Flames have been playing the right way for some time now.

Yeah I never liked 6 on 4.
You want to stretch the ice and make the killers chase. If you create small spaces they don’t have to chase as hard, now you can use your sticks more actively.
14 even strength goals by Weegar ties him with Zadorov for the most by a Flames defenceman since the days of AL MacInnis. Giordano did have 14 ES and SHG in his Vezina season, but 4 of those were shorthanded. He has 11 ESG in the 15-16 season when he had 21 he had 11 as well as one other year. Dion Phaneuf got most of his on the PP never exceeding 10 ES goals.

Isles never play well in early games do they?
Quote:
This team not showing up to a matinee game in my lifetime probably has something to do with it
Quote:
Im pretty certain isles have never won a Saturday matinee. Or beaten the flames. Something's gotta give
Quote:
Game 6 in 1980 was a Saturday matinee

And apparently they beat the flames in November.

Been so long since I went to a day game! Beers for breakfast baby! Going to be in the mid 50’s in February also? Let’s go boys!

damn...didnt realize it was a matinee today

First early afternoon game of the year.
Euro fans watching live, rise up. LGI!
Quote:
I hate matinees
Quote:
A couple of you have alluded to this. We're playing a 1 PM game at home against a middling team from the west. This is a game that they need to come out fast, establish a lead, and build on it.
The Flames are distracted by all the rumors of player movements. They may say it doesn't affect them, but how can it not? Take it to these guys. This is a very important game.
Quote:
Never mind a win in a matinee. How about a goal
Quote:
Isles are not good at day games, we have been bad at them for years
Varly Softy
Quote:
hit the net, ya never know
Quote:
Don't lemme hear Abt who may have been out of position that's all on the goalie...all. unacceptable
Quote:
Not sure why they are not keeping the lineup the same. Soft goal there.
Quote:
Isles came out well, did not score and then Varly gave up a softie
Quote:
sluggish start. isles look like they are skating in mud
Quote:
Simply put, that shot has to be stopped. That goal cannot be allowed by an NHL goaltender, let alone one of Varly's caliber. Puts the team behind the 8 ball just minutes into the game.
Quote:
Total beer league goal. ####

Varly still sleeping I guess. Holy #### that was weak

A loss today would ruin the vibes of the last two wins

merde...that's gonna' be offsides.

it was almost like Varly: look what I've done! Markstrom: hold my beer!

Brendan and Butch are saying probably offside (I think?) but really no one knows
Quote:
Yeah engvall off by a mile
Quote:
There’s no way he could’ve known the puck wasn’t already deep in the zone. He sees markstrom coming out to stop the puck, knows he’s touched up, so he goes back in the zone. Not his fault, just unfortunate
Quote:
Engvall haters feasting this afternoon

####ing engvall
Quote:
Lou and Isles fans were so determined to add speed to what looked like a painfully slow skating squad that when Engvall appeared, he looked like part of the long term solution.
In reality, he’s exactly what the Leafs knew they had. A soft, contact averse speedy winger with size. A guy that was on a painfully soft team (the Leafs) but was even too soft for them.
Lou took a chance and I suppose the third round pick was not a big deal. The bigger problem is that Lou could not accept his mistake and like he always does, he doubled down and signed a long term deal for a guy who hadn’t proven himself to be a fit for the Isles.
Hubey Dooby Doo!

Abysmal effort
Quote:
It was obvious they were going to score right after they pointed out they were one of the worst PPG teams
Quote:
Embarrassing shameful effort today on home ice against a below .500 team allowing more than 3 goals per game. They should rightfully be booed off the ice. They talk about every game being a playoff game. Disgusting. Fans should get a refund for this garbage.

Getting absolutely dominated.

I would feel bad for the fans who paid to watch this, but I went to the 7-0 Pens game. People should feel bad for me.

The players should be embarrassed about the inconsistent efforts they continue to put out this season. Lane or not, it's a huge issue and the constant are the players.

Roy's putting the 4th line out now to do their thing, but it's too late. Gotta play the 4th heavy in the first and less later in the game, imo.

I haven't seen the Patrick Roy Islanders come back from a 3-0 deficit yet
Quote:
Not happening Calgary is playing sound hockey and taking advantage of every bounce and opportunity. The Islanders can not break their defense. They need to generate on the rush or crash the net. The pretty cross ice passes are not there. It looks like Calgary are playing the defensive dice style that Roy criticized. They also need to move the puck quicker before Calgary can get into their structure. Barzal holds on to the puck and before he moves it they are already back into their structure. Needs to move it faster and get more pucks to the net. It's going to be ugly ones if they are going to get back into the game.
Quote:
I hope Roy reads them the riot act in between periods. The soft play and standing around in the defensive end is atrocious. A Greyhound performance - lots of passengers.

Whoa just saw the score. What happened? Isles forgot there was a game today?
Good Ol’ Wes

Calgary skating with rabbits foot up their asses. Two missed high sticks and a stupid offsides technicality.

Isles' are too close to playoff spot, league's whispering in Wes' ear to force an L.
Either that, or Isles still can't play a good matinee game.

We have no one in our bottom six that can skate with the puck.
We just can’t afford to have two dump and chase lines that generate no offense because they’re just skating around killing clock, especially when we’re losing.
Put Engvall on line 3 and put Fasching or Holmstrom in his spot on line 2.
Martin in the lineup over MacLean is a mistake too, he belongs on waivers or as a healthy scratch.
