I'm part of a pretty spineless union. I'm not sure why there is this thought that they are this powerful entity in Albertan politics. The days of some farmer version of Jimmy Hoffa are long gone.
What bothers me much more is that the current government keeps doing random things that completely blindsides the electorate. That much more seems like private interests are running the show.

I'll never understand the right wing infatuation with unions in 2024 when there is so much more to attack governments and focus energy on than labor rights.
This isn't 1970s, mob-era American working class stuff.
They always come back to big, bad unions when they're not fighting culture wars or grossly misrepresenting their loss of freedoms even when they love taking them away from others.

Don't forget about what's between people's legs and people's preferences in the bedroom. For self-proclaimed champions of small government, conservatives/right-wingers simply can't help themselves wading into that debate and trying to take their position on the soap box and enforce rules and lay down the law as much as they can.

It’s because they’ve been essentially brainwashed by decades of messaging from the parties they support who represent the interests of the corporate world, and to be clear when I say the interests of the corporate world I certainly don’t mean the interests of white collar workers.
Perhaps this may be best suited for the city political thread but I thought I would post it here as well. The City of Calgary released their report into the 2021 election campaign financing well after it should have been released. A few items of note highlighted in bold
" While candidates in the election were limited to accepting donations of $5,000 or less from individuals, TPAs could collect donations up to $30,000 from corporations, unions and individuals. Two of the TPAs, Calgarians for a Progressive Future (known as Calgary's Future) and Fluoride Yes, had earlier voluntarily released their donor information.
Calgary's Future received $1,708,826 in the years leading up to the 2021 election. There were six contributions, all from civic unions like the Amalgamated Transit Union and two locals with the Canadian Union of Public Employees.
Calgary's Future endorsed numerous candidates in the election, including Jyoti Gondek, who was elected as mayor, as well as several now serving councillors.
The other major TPA in the election was Calgary Tomorrow, which backed the candidacy of former councillor Jeff Davison, who was running for mayor. He finished third in that race.
Calgary Tomorrow raised $422,158 in donations from 176 donors. Many of those contributions come from the corporate sector, including numerous companies connected to the property development industry and the oilpatch.
Don't forget about what's between people's legs and people's preferences in the bedroom. For self-proclaimed champions of small government, conservatives/right-wingers simply can't help themselves wading into that debate and trying to take their position on the soap box and enforce rules and lay down the law as much as they can.
I wonder when Smith is going to lay down the law and ban circumcision. I'm sure the religious-right will be on board with preventing genital 'alterations' prior to consent.
Pancholi officially announced the launch of her campaign for the NDP leadership this morning. She was on Real Talk with Ryan Jesperson this morning. An interesting part of her platform is the abolishment of the consumer carbon tax.

Thanks for this!
She comes out of the gate gun's blazing. Young, attractive, smart and immediately talks about wanting to get rid of one of the worst policies that angers people. Brings up the US Inflation Reduction Act which aims to have America become a clean and renewable energy powerhouse by specific means.
A key component of the Inflation Reduction Act is making sure that this is all done by quality wage standards and sufficient proportion of quality professionals and apprentices. It really is a focus on jobs, the economy, tax revenue and growth for your average person. Texas is absolutely killing it in this regard.

We’ll see more of these recall petitions. Other than giving people a venting opportunity, they won’t achieve much. This is from a Wetaskiwin group opposing a permanent shelter for the homeless and trying to boot Mayor Tyler Gandam. As in this case, these will mostly be used to try to oust mayors for COUNCIL decisions. (I wish people knew how local government worked.) I wonder what community will be next.
It's only a matter of time before a recall happens (or hell, multiple recalls happen) on Marlaina. Will it work? Nah, but with that rule, you reap what you sow. This is only going to grow in popularity now.

Dumb conservatives are turning this process into the democratic equivalent of a SLAPP suit just to make more whining noises over politicians they disagree with.

I'm not sure if there would be much use in trying to recall Smith outside of a moral victory because she could stay on as Premier anyways although she wouldn't have a seat in the legislature. The party would have to remove her from leadership or she would have to step down.
I’m not in favour of recall because the threshold needs to be high, otherwise it just gets used too much. That said, I’d sing one for Marlaina immediately if someone asked.
And yeah, maybe it’s a moral victory. Maybe they’ll take her out anyway. But I’d still sign.
