I'd just be interested how you came to the conclusion that Hanifin is a mercenary. What about him has given you that impression? I have neither seen or heard anything from him that would make me paint him in that corner.

That's not what you did though.

You climbed inside his head and told us he's stop caring when he signed his deal and that he's always been lukewarm to Calgary.

Get the assets, the cap space, the flexibility. Hanifin is a good top 4 dman but he's a support player. His best years will be wasted and the only upside you get with signing him is hoping he's productive in his later years. Doesn't seem worth the risk. You can spend that money over the next 8 years in multiple ways that will be more beneficial and less risky.
By what measurement?

Simple math tells us that with 32 teams in the NHL, there are 64 top 2 Dmen at any time.

Since becoming a Flame, Hanifin is 41st in the entire league in offensive production.

Thats solidly top 2 area....never mind this continuing claim that he is some 2nd line "support" player.

Add in his skating abilities and its just absurd how poorly some view the guy.

It’s not really anything you’ll believe or give any credence to. Just a gut feel. Watch interviews. Honestly most players are like that, and I don’t blame them either, it’s a business.

The big one though is he’s already come out in the past and said he wants to go play in the States. Then all of a sudden he’s willing to stay here but comes into the negotiations with some huge number? Okay haha

Anyway believe whatever you want, it’s an opinion.

Ah, yes. It is more difficult when people point out that your ideas based on no data are nonsense.

But, you go ahead and continue to prattle on about what these players think to others.

Oh no he didn't, Eric Francis said he wants to play in the US and then flipped on it when it was rumoured before Hanifin was close to signing. I have never heard Hanifin himself say he wants to play in the US.

He’s an excellent player. Yes we have other guys that are about as good, but two of them will probably be gone or will be at the end of their careers before the Flames are contenders. Noah would have 3-4 years left still at that time.

Flames are probably never gone to have the elite centre, defender and goalie all at the same time that some of you think is a prerequisite to go for it. Tanking and almost limitless high draft picks is not enough to ensure that - see exhibit a up north.

It’s no big deal if flames sign him to 8*$8 even though that would be a disappointment (no current team discount for the extra year). And it’s also no big deal if they trade him, they have a few years to build the d core up before it really starts to matter.
So you expect the Flames to be contenders in 4 of 5 years, while at the same time saying it's not going to happen with high picks and a surplus of picks? So how exactly is it going to happen? If you believe in the drafting and developing of the organization, how would higher picks and more picks not be better than later picks and fewer picks?

Either way just make up your mind Hanifin. Sign it or let the Conman do his job.

He has?

Honestly asking because some continue to claim this, but i have neither read nor heard this.

Again, I'm sure most players would love to play in their hometown with everything being equal, but since that is impossible for 99% of them for varying reasons, there have to be other motivating factors like the border stuff during covid, tax rates, wife/partner desires etc.

Nah, we'll all know he was right if Noah Hanifin signs for a lot of money in a city. Hope to not eat any crow on that but I guess time will tell!

I think all we'll know is he isn't a Calgary Flame any longer.

We won't know that he was just a mercenary, or that he was luke warm to Calgary, or that was an easy decision, or that he just wanted to get out of here.

Who says they won’t have high picks or a surplus of picks? They’ve already added picks. They will be adding more.

Well I really hope (and doubt) this is stopping Conny from doing his job. It’s fine if Conny still has a preference for a signing, but at this point he better be treating the lack of a decision as a no and perusing his trade options.

Hanifin really is having a great season and in particular has excelled with the extra minutes he has been given lately. If he is a s good as he has shown in the last 10 games or so, I'd love to have him back on a long term deal.

That could be recency bias though. Has he turned some corner or is this a contract year bump. I have always liked Hanifin but viewed him as rather replaceable.

Conroy and company should know him better than anyone. No matter what happens it sure seems like they'd prefer to have him back. Just based on what little info drips out, they're trying much harder with him compared to Lindholm, Tanev or Toffoli.

My impression has been that Hanifin likes Calgary and has enjoyed his time here but wants to go back to where he’s from. I don’t think that’s a problem at all. I think it’s purely speculative to suggest he’s a mercenary or greedy. My impression is those speculations are likely untrue because I’ve never heard anyone in the know say anything bad about Hanifin. Also, I don’t remember ever thinking Hanifin wasn’t playing hard for the Flames. I think he’s given them an honest effort, right up to the present.
