On the other hand, if Conroy was shopping him, someone would have probably leaked that by now.

There have been rumours of teams interested. And i would guess the Flames know what the best offers for him are.

"Consulted with family in boston before making decision"

Annnd we're expecting the family (and in-laws) in Boston to be pro-Calgary long term?

It's like telling the liberals you'll probably vote for them, but just want to consult with your conservative uncles first on whether it's a good idea.

Not really. If family wants you to make decisions that are better for them they're not family. They're ####ty friends.

You have no idea on what Hanifin or their ( his family) viewpoint on staying with the Flames would be? Right?

Let’s wait and see!

Right?

If you ask for advice/input, chances are no matter who the person is, their person preference will play into the response in some way, even if it's unconsciously.

That includes family.

Unless you are surrounded by the saintliest and most selfless people who only have interest in being cheerleaders regardless of which direction you're contemplating.. (in which case, lucky you!).. then chances are they have an opinion.

We all wish what you're suggesting is the case. But I think that's more wishful thinking, at least when it comes to most people.

Maybe your family is different!

Most families are not selfish and don’t make their best interests above yours.

I don't know what you're trying to say.

If everyone just waited to see, these threads would die off, or not exist altogether. That isn't the case because people are naturally inclined to fill the void in between news with hockey chatter. So we twiddle our thumbs and speculate and guess. Which, as fans, is all we have to go off of.

I hope he signs. But it might be a fool's hope.

A fool’s hope? It may happen and you may be right.

Who's saying they're selfish by having an opinion? Like I said, a lot of times it isn't conscious or manipulative. People just form opinions on their personal beliefs. And those don't always align with yours. So if you ask them their opinion, it's going to be their opinion at the end of the day.

"Most families" eh? I'm happy for you that you were raised by saints or robots and actually believe that. I'd love to come by and observe this utopia you live in.

I wouldn't help him get 8 years and leave town unless the offer is an absolute home run...right now the Flames can offer something that nobody else can. Don't be like Tre and help a player bail and then thank him for being such a great guy after.

Brutal take. Piss the guy off so he says he won’t sign anywhere, lowering our return. He’ll still get paid in the summer regardless

"unless it's a homerun" his price as a rental will still be high, I wouldn't be worried about moving him to his team of choice (who doesn't have much to offer)

Yeah, Hanifin has done everything asked of him. He lived up to his contract and now earned the right to choose his path. End the relationship on a high note and don't burn any bridges. Players talk amongst themselves about other cities and clubs. If he is going to leave anyway, might as well send him off with good vibes and good things to say about the Flames to his peers.

Trading him is the right thing to do in my opinion. You get some assets back to help your rebuild, you get the cap space and flexibility, hopefully they use it on short terms deals they can flip at the deadline for more assets or maybe take on a bad contract or two for picks, you help your draft position over the next few years, and if and when the time comes, you can spend the money on someone who likely has less risk of regression and is hopefully entering their prime as your team is entering its contention window.
