Players ramp up all year.

Missing a month now would make him less effective as a rental.

Yes they know that they're getting a defensive stalwart warrior in Tanev - but they need to look at how he would fit in their defensive system too and who on their current roster may be best suited to playing with him and they can't do that if he isn't playing.

Okay, the scouting reason. I’m clearly in the minority here. If the Flames need to play him to avoid sending a message about him being injury prone, or to allow other teams to scout, or because they’re in the playoff race, I guess, whatever.

If that’s the case, all I can say is that I hope the deal gets done ASAP.

Okay, fair enough. Your second point especially is compelling to me.

Sitting him would piss him off for sure, which may be important because there is actually some signs he could re-sign here even if traded.

Not really relevant for Tanev, but important to guys who's contracts depend on production.
