What exactly are we doing that is better than Arizona?

I guess we have a 40 year old barn that can hold a lot of people with trucks on the concourse and lines for the bathroom that take all intermission. And we have a pretty decent sized fan base. I'll give you that. We are doing that better than Arizona.

Compare their average ticket price for a 4,600-seat arena with the average price of the best 4,600 seats at the Saddledome, and get back to me.

We should raise a banner that our 4,600 best seats are more expensive than Arizona's 4,600 total seats. But we aren't Edmonton.

Nobody's talking about raising banners.
But the notion that the Flames' franchise has been just as bad as Arizona's over the last 20 years is simply nuts.
In the cap era (19 years and counting), the Coyotes have made the playoffs four times. They've been through bankruptcy, lost one ownership group after another, lost two arena leases, tried and failed to find a site for an arena of their own. They were taken over by the league because nobody wanted to own them. They've consistently lost tens of millions of dollars per year, and are now in immediate danger of having to relocate.
This is what you're comparing the Flames to? Seriously?

And still want to spend the money on prime or post-prime players. As a losing team that's in the lottery. That's kind of how we got into the Tkachuk bridge deal situation to begin with. The cap was going up, until it didn't.
|
The Flames had 11 guys making 6% of the cap or more, that is how they ended up in the Tkachuk situation. Adding Hanifin as a 4th guy who will be making 6% of the cap or more in 3 years time will not prevent them from signing young players.

I didn’t compare the Flames to the Coyotes. That was me replying to dissentowner who said the strategy I advocated for would make us Arizona.

Technically two... but I wouldn't really call the 2014-15 Flames Treliving's team.

drafting, easily. The Coyotes have had 6 top 10 picks in the last 10 years (plus two 11th and one 12th overall), including two top 3 picks and another top 5 pick. They haven't had lotto luck (e.g. picking 3rd in the McDavid/Eichel draft), but they should be better than this.

They are not comparable, the Flames in that time period were much more competitive and went to a SC final. If you don't like Arizona try Buffalo. Either way trading away all your prime players is a recipe for a long time of being bad. Hell, you can even use those losers up North as an example. How many years of top 5 picks? How many 1st overall picks? Now tell me how many Stanley Cups that has won them.

Actually, you did compare the Flames to the Coyotes when you said the Flames weren't doing anything better than the Coyotes. And you brought up the Coyotes' one year of comparative playoff success as if that clinched your case.

I said since 2004. It’s been almost 20 years since that Lecavalier-Iginla fight in the finals. We’ve since won as many series as the Coyotes, despite having stable ownership, arena, and the implementation of the cap.
How many 1OA picks did Las Vegas have? Colorado? Tampa Bay? Not more than 1/team if I remember correctly. Montreal had a great finals run with nothing and still set up their team pretty well. Conroy can do the same for us if we don’t give Hanifin a Hertl contract.

Well in the end you won't get what you want, the team is not tearing it down to the studs. With the long term deals like Kadri, Weegar, and Huberdeau it would be much worse than trying to retool on the fly which is the plan.
