The team is not worth $1 billion in Arizona, though.
It would be similar to when Atlanta was sold for $170 million and then the NHL added a $60 million "relocation fee." I mean, maybe they just do it that way again.

I imagine the relocation fee would be significantly higher. Maybe the franchise sells for $660M and the relocation fee is $350M, or whatever combination you need to get it to $1B

Considering they're worth $780 million now, it's pretty incredible.
You wonder if the Atlanta owners are kicking themselves now. They wanted to get rid of that team to help their basketball club. They also sold the Hawks in 2015 for $850 million.
You'd think an NHL team today in Atlanta would probably be worth close to $1 billion. The Hawks are now worth $3.3 billion. That's a pretty costly error by that Atlanta Spirit group, leaving $3 billion (and counting) on the table between the two franchises.
If I'm Salt Lake City, I'm jumping at the opportunity to grab the Coyotes. Some really good young players in that organization and could turn it around into a contender quickly with the right management team.
Hell no.
I think if we've learned anything its that if you're starting a new team you WANT that expansion draft.
The ability to extort assets out of every team in the League? You dont turn that opportunity down.
