I think "I don't want to play for the Flames" and "I'm not sure I want to commit for 8 years" are two completely different things. Pretty sure Hanifin is firmly in the second bracket, and I get it - there's uncertainty right now as to where this team is going. I've always liked Hanifin and I have no ill will towards him whatsoever if he decides to move on. If Conroy has his answer, there's more than enough time to facilitate a trade and work on a possible sign-and-trade.

I fully expect Hanifin to fetch a very, very healthy return, especially with an extension in place. As much as I like Noah, this is exciting ... in addition to the Lindholm and Tanev trades, it could set the Flames up extremely well for the future.

Yeah I agree you never know how the market will play out but would expect the return to be bigger than Lindholm

In many ways, despite the hate that seems to be bubbling up more and more for Treliving's work, he did leave the team set up for a re-tool with all the contracts expiring this year and next. I said it in the summer that the Flames were in a good spot, and it was not accidental. He had a parachute with the cord ready to pull if the team wasn't performing. Have to give him credit for that.

If the Flames trade Tanev, they won't make the playoffs this year.

If the Flames keep Hanifin and tried to buy next summer, they could be a playoff team but no way they are a contender to win the cup.

If you look at the age of the players with contracts, we have going into the 25/26 season, unless we develop high end star players that can carry the team, we will not be a contender.

If we sell like we are this year each of the next 3 years, it's what is best for the team even if signing Hanifin makes some sense. It's going to be tough to build a contender before then, unless we win the draft lottery or hit on a bunch of picks. But most picks we picked in the last draft and moving forward likely need 2 to 4 years to develop.

Out of thanks, but yup.

Lots of fans through the summer talking about how the team is screwed for 10 years. No, that's not how it works.

Not only has Conroy turned over half the team already, with more coming, but Kadri and maybe even Huberdeau are looking much better. The cap is in great shape, and the team is more fun to watch.

It's always impossible to judge a GM from our seats fully as you don't know what marching orders they are getting from their own boss but I think everybody liked his work until the one terrible summer. Before that I think he was held in pretty high regard for what he'd done and is being judged a bit harshly because of how bad that summer is looking in retrospect.

He built a great team the years before that had a legit chance to win before they folded up against the oilers and I think that group had a legit chance to win the cup which is all you can ask for as a fan.

But make no mistake, what followed was a disaster of a summer for the flames franchise that they won't dig themselves out of fully for years. Conroy has some pieces to work with but if Tkachuk had been traded for a younger star, Gaudreau had been moved for assets earlier and he just swallowed the last year of the deal with Monahan, the team could be in a much stronger position and it was an absolute disaster from an asset management perspective. As fans, there's still lots to be excited about with the direction and we move on now but I understand why some see it as being a big black mark on his resume.

Hearing Conroy is working the phones somewhere in Jersey at this very moment. Hanfin and Tanev related. I will report back with the details as they roll in.

I wonder if Conroy could get a top-5 pick from the 2019-2022 draft for Hanifin on a "sign-and-trade" deal. If you're a team like LA, NY, DET...Hanifin for 8 years looks pretty good.

You think this was a master plan? That's insane.

Moving out legit NHL players for a few later picks and b level prospects isn't going to retool things quickly. It's a start but it's about 5% of what needs to happen.

What I am hearing in regards to Hanifin is this, the offer is still on the table and Hanifin has still not decided. The Flames have not really been shopping Hanifin up until this point, they have given him the time to decide. Now Conroy is starting to reach out to teams about Hanifin but the offer still stands, in other words it could go either way still. I expect due to how long Hanifin has strung this along that he will end up traded but he just as easily could decide to sign the contract, I am not Hanifin so I have no idea. I do believe he legitimately can't decide, loves the team and the organization, likes Calgary, but is not sure where the team is heading as far as being competitive and he is an American. We know the boarder shutdown during Covid was not easy on guys who couldn't get back across the boarder, I think that scares some guys. Sorry I don't have anything concrete on what direction he is going.

^Thanks, but border...the word is border. A boarder is someone living under your roof eating your food.

Apparently the Dallas Stars are in on Tanev too. Doubt Stankoven or Bourque are on the table but Groshnikov is interesting. Oscar Back is progessing as well behind the two big time prospects. Improved his stats every season he's played so far.

yeah you're not getting Stankoven or Bourque. Some decent defensemen in the system though that could be interesting (Bichsel, Kyrou, Bertucci).

Don’t think Back or Groshnikov hit the mark unless there is something additional along with them.

Would they move Nils Lundvist for Tanev? Switch up RHD players?
