Not really. Would basically be just a body to finish the season with. Maybe a small chance he shows something

Stanley sucks. I'd expect more than that.

Feels like the Flames should be able to do better than a 2nd and #8 D if the Flames retain 50%

Taking a while to get to 5000

^ Exactly. If the number of teams interested is even half of whats been speculated, they can do better. Much better even.
Remember, Frank doesn't think Tanev is worth a first so he probably sees this as an overpay from Winnipeg.

Ya that is basically a 2nd round pick for Tanev.

Two years ago the Habs got a 1st, a 4th and a former 3rd for Chiarot. Tanev is at least as good as Chiarot.

A big no thank you to Stanley. Flames can do way better than that.

Disclaimer I am speculating: Wouldn't the idea of moving out Hanifin and/or Tanev be having the runway to give some of the AHL defenders a more fulsome audition for the remainder of the season?

It almost never happens that a Poirier comes to the NHL and is a top 4 guy off the hop. Trading Hanifin almost locks in another 3 years of being a bottom 5-10 team in the league. That may be a good thing but that is what trading him almost ensures IMO.
Could all be moot if the intel Sec has is accurate.

Conroy is likely returning some sort of younger controllable player in one of the Hanifin/Tanev deals so it really isn't a crisis like you are insinuating. I'd say it is likely they are looking at this type of deal whether it is a Bowen Byram or similar type return (assuming Hanifin extends when traded). At least one of Poirier, Solovyov, Brzustewicz, Morin and Kuznetsov is going to push through in the next 1-2 years as well.
How many 30 something players does this team need on retirement contracts? Hanifin may age well with his skating, but the fact that he's appearing to need convincing to stay despite getting a massive offer tells me he's not all that interested in being a Flame anyway. Pass.

Especially with where the Flames are in the standings.
Conroy has been adamant that young players need to play in a competitive environment to learn how to win at this level. If we subtract Hanifin and Tanev, that doesn't immediately drop us down the standings. What we get is Poirier/Solo/Kuznetsov coming up and playing in games where the outcome actually matters. The playoffs would still be within reach, so the environment at the NHL level would be that every game matters.
Perfect opportunity to help young players develop.
...the Flames would likely tumble down the standings through this process, but it doesn't remove the benefits of having those young players play in those games.

I get the conflict because it's either give the player you know a premium salary for his role. Or you likely need to find another player like this who you will need to compensate at the top of the payscale to play the role at a future date.
With Weegar and Anderson, neither is your stud number 1 play all roles type. So having a third guy who's in the mould of Hanifin to mix in is more of a need than a luxury.
The fact that he had not committed yet leads me to think you should trade him and take your pain for a couple of seasons to try and get some new players in place.

The deal would be interesting because Montreal's 2nd could be a very early 2nd round pick, maybe the best 2nd rounder available.

Switch Stanley for Salomonsson and I'd do it.

That is not enough for a 50% retained Tanev IMO.
Seravalli is pissing me off lately.

Montreal's 2nd from Winnipeg is a great starting point. If we don't land a 1st, that would be the best 2nd rounder in play, but as others have mentioned I would want a prospect with some upside for 50% retention.

Pachal ate one of those free spots. And if one game is any indication, he's not going to lose it.
I don't even know they'd call anybody up seeing as they have Gilbert and Oesterle just waiting to crater the 3rd pairing.
