I certainly hope Conroy’s offer is going down with every passing day.
8x$6.5 or GTFO

5th D: Zadorov. Check.
Best all around C: Lindholm. Check.
Leading scorer: ?? Are we talking about Tkachuk? Because I'm blanking otherwise.

Toffoli was our leading scorer in 22/23.

What would you guys think of
Tanev for 2nd and (Holtz or Siegenthaler)
I cant see NJ giving away their 1st this year as a non playoff team. And the Flames are not gonna wait for their 2025 if they want to be retooling on the fly.
Here you get 2 players who are young and can slot into the lineup.
Mercer seems too good for it to be apart of a Tanev deal. Maybe something you can revisit if they want Markstrom in the offseason

Right. The point is that if you just trade every pending UFA because they are at maximum value, you end up just developing the final pieces for cup winning teams.
Now is Hanifin a guy you want to commit to? Maybe. All winning teams have such a guy. The question is whether he is more or less epxsive than a guy you have to attract later.

And now we need to pay a higher percentage of cap to give a max term contract to the player who contributed to that team and needs extra time to think about wanting to be in Calgary? Yuck.
This is like what San Jose did with Hertl. But they aren’t worried, you see, since the cap is going up.

So because Toffoli scored a lot, meaning Calgary didn't generally, Hanifin is a poor defenceman who doesn't merit being paid a little less than Dmitri Orlov or Jared Spurgeon.
I think you just don't like Hanifin and are stretching arguments to justify not liking if he extends.

If we're going to trade everyone away for picks and spend a couple of years building. I'd rather:
I love Tanev but fear a major injury so trade him for picks
Trade Markstrom for picks and go with Vladar and Wolf. Why keep him if the next few years we'll be middling? We better get Wolf to the Flames before another team outbids us and he's gone.
Sign Hanifin for goodness sake. He's only 27 and having his best year.

I like Hanifin as a player this year. He’s even pretty.
We have no use for him when we can do what the Sharks could have done with Hertl. They’re going nowhere fast and people would have paid a ton for both of them.
Luckily it appears Conroy is smarter than Grier who admittedly inherited that Hertl situation from Wilson, but retained on Burns for a bucket of pucks.

I always have a hard time grasping this mentality. There are 31 other teams in the league, quite a few in far better situations than the Calgary Flames, and quite a few of those are closer to friends and family. This player has worked hard for years to be in this position to have his pick of a situation that suits him best...I don't get the "pick Calgary or beat it" mentality

In reality NHLers get one real shot to choose where they play in their entire career, and that's their first time at Free Agency. You're not going to get that shot again when you're a free agent at 34. This is Hanifin's only real time to pick his shot.
It's not like the Flames are some great franchise that are perennial contenders right now, there are a lot of question marks about the future of the team and the plan for the next 10 years.
Can't blame a guy for assessing all his options.

Totally.
especially with this team being a rapidly evolving entity.
How were things looking in September?
How were things two weeks ago?
How are things now?
The longer Noah waits the better & more complete picture he has of where this team is headed in both the short and long term.

You can if you have a deadline of the all star break and now there’s a game in the books since then. I hope he does assess his options, but that’s bad form.
Deadline’s over, heard nothing, bye.

Lose them?
Trade them!
Why pay for UFA years.
Draft well and max out RFA contracts but then sell when they become UFA pending and don't sign other UFA players.
Keep a continual pipeline of picks and prospects coming into the team.
Add two rookies every year should be the goal so moving out pending UFA for younger players, prospects, and picks should be the goal.
Build a team around three lines of second line talent players and draft for home run opportunities in the rounds 3-7. Goal should be to have 4 picks in the first three rounds every year. Draft for great not good and serviceable.
If you have the pipeline of picks and prospects you will be able to outbid when a superstar becomes available.
When you have a top 10 team that competes to make the final four every year you can adjust the UFA rule to allow to sign or retain players that are top 5% (top 40) in the league. Unless they are that level why take them when you can have the cap space and the younger players.

If you can't see the difference between giving an 8 year contract (what Toffoli wanted) to a soon to be 32 year old (April) forward that doesn't skate well and profiles to be at the very end of his peak years (forwards peak sooner and age quicker for the most part) or a just turned 27 (January) defenseman who may just be entering his peak then we need to stop discussing this.
If Toffoli would have been willing to sign until he was 35 at the going AAV for his type of player, he'd still be a Flame.

Yep, in a heart beat. Basically a 1st + 2nd.

How will things look two weeks from now?
Next September?
4.5 years from now?
Nothing that happened since that all star break deadline was issued should change your answer.
