The potential return on both Hanifin and Tanev is tantalizing to consider… I wouldn’t be sad if we extended Hanifin with how’s he’s played though, what a statement game. Tanev was his usual rock steady self too, great showcase performances by both as well if we do happen to trade one or both soon here. You love to see it!

Hughes and Nemec will likely be better than Hanifin, and they're significantly younger. I just don't see Jersey giving up significant assets for Hanifin. They don't really need him that bad and they can go after him for free this summer.

If you want the player you trade for him. It is easy to say if they want Hanifin they can just go after him this summer, the problem is there will be 10-15 other teams thinking the same thing.

I have a really hard time extending veterans like this on the cusp of what is a re-something.
Tying up your cap for 8 years with another veteran, when realistically you are only competitive again in 2-3 years (most optimistic timeline for re-something's) feels significantly riskier than cashing in this asset.

I feel less trepidation about re-upping Hanafin than a lot of other expiring contract UFAs (ie Lindholm or Tanev).
He won’t view this as a retirement contract, and his game should hold up well into his thirties.
If we sign him to the deal reportedly on the table, great! If we trade him for a haul by the deadline, great!
In Connie we trust.

Agreed. I would be all about signing him then trading Rasmuss. I think the return would be better( by a lot) and i think out if the two players the smooth skater will age a lot better

Hanifin - Weegar
Kylington - Andersson
Wouldn't be a bad top 4 through a retool, age-wise nor performance-wise.

Trading for him doesn't guarantee you get him past this year either.
Plus, NJ may only be interested in him at a UFA price, as opposed to a heavy trade price plus essentially a UFA contract.
They may consider him a luxury instead of a necessity.

He's 100% a luxury not a necessity and that's why I doubt they give up anything significant for Hanifin. Jersey has a solid young up and coming defence. They're not the Maple Leafs.

I agree with this logic but if it's not an automatic "yes" from Hanifin then trade him to the States. I feel like the Swedes like being in Calgary.

Watching the Bruins - they could really use Tanev. How did Forbort get $3M and a NTC? But they have no draft picks (well a 2025 1st but they can’t trade their only 1/2 round pick in the next two years can they) and only Lysell as a prospect worth looking at.

I was wondering that exact same thing while watching the game. Good on him I guess and maybe a sign of how hard it is to acquire quality defensive depth in this league.

Hope we don't sign Hanifin, he's a decent player but not great value at 7.5m and cap space + trade return is better value than simply keeping him.

I keep remembering how he played important games against the Avalanches and Oilers and lost my appetite for Hanifin.
Sure sign him but no more than 6.5M with no NMC if there is no good package out there. Anymore than that is asking for pain

I've become addicted to futures of late so I lean trading him.
But he's exactly what every team in the league is looking for when you take into account age, experience, size, speed and a good person from all reports.
If the Flames are successful in turning things around, still having Hanifin in the fold will make the back to respectability move much easier to accomplish.
I won't be upset if he's signed.
18th in ice time for dmen in the last 3 years (39th in ice time per game)
33rd in xGF% all situations and that's with two of the three years being on a non playoff team.
He's not overrated at all.

Why can't the Flames sign a new Hanifin in 3 years using the cap space from not signing our Hanifin when our (hopefully) competitive window opens?
Now I know it isn't THAT easy, but its not just futures you get. It not having that contract so you can sign another UFA in the future , when your competitive window opens. In the next 4 years lots of good FA's will be avail. We have to be patient and then strike properly.
It's the flexibility to get other players AND assets trading Hanifin provides
I really hope they dont sign him, but understand why they would. I just think it is a mistake. Go all in and do this properly

As mentioned above by GioforPM, guys like Forbort are commanding $3 million a season. The people that want Hanafin gone may be up for a rude awakening when they find out how hard it's going to be to replace him in the lineup.

Because Hanifin is not that common. You pray one of those high 1st rounders turns into a player like that. He’s been an NHL d since he was 18. You know exactly what you get from him every game and he is resilient to injuries.
With the cap going up, that 7.5 is a bargain for Noah’s prime years IMO.
Only trade him if he doesn’t want to be here.
