Have fun signing him in the summer then. Good luck in the playoffs! Just another burned year for a couple teams…

which is funny because the Leafs don't have a 2nd in the next three drafts. But yeah, the thought has also crossed my mind ... talking heads really seem eager to downplay Tanevs value. Have to wonder why.

Before the lindholm trade I would have said a 2nd also. Now it’s a game of chicken to see if any team will pony up a 1st. Conny probably already has a bunch of offers of a 2nd already. I like the odds of it becoming a first .

I would just keep him on the Flames if all we’re going to get is a second! Get him resigned and let him support our younger guys. He is much more valuable on the roster than magic beans!

What happens if he doesn't resign? This is the type of thing the Flames have to avoid
More likely they wait right to the deadline and take the best offer

I’m not going to complain about a 2nd plus. With a plus being a third or a reasonable prospect (not a Hanowski).
If they are done negotiating with Tanev, I’d also like to see him held out of games pretty soon. But that’s probably a long shot.

I would trade and then throw a boatload of money on a 2 year deal in offseason where the cap space doesn’t matter for the Flames the next 2 years

He’s worth a 1st for sure and is arguably way more impactful to a game than Lindholm.
Especially in a playoff run, the way he plays.
People saying only worth a 2nd likely aren’t noticing him (which for a dman also is a good thing).
1st or re-sign him.

I would assume Hanifin's fate is decided by tomorrow. We won't know it until signed or traded, but the decision doesn't need to linger longer than day after Boston game.
If no answer from Hanifin? Then Conroy knows his answer.
I want to sign him personally, but I only want him signed if he knows he wants to be here. He should know at this point.

Definitely feels like the media is trying to drive the price DOWN for Tanev, given how connected Toronto is to TSN/Sportsnet its rather comical.
Conroy is already on record saying he didn't include Tanev in the VAN deal because he can get a 1st in a separate deal. Yet we've got duds like Johnson clamoring we'll be lucky to get a 2nd and a low prospect etc...
Meanwhile we all know how bad Toronto has been trying to get Tanev, yet doesnt want to give up anything worthwhile in doing so.
Sure sure guys, we all believe you.

I personally hope they keep one of Hanifin or Tanev…preferably Hanifin simply because of age. Defensemen typically take a long time to develop. There are exceptions of course, but they can take 3-5 years to be NHL ready, and then another 2-3 years to really find their way in the NHL. Having three veteran D like Weegar, Andersson and one of Hanifin or Tanev to stabilize things and mentor youngsters would be smart. Otherwise you’re rushing kids and/or relying heavily on bottom end UFAs like Oesterle.

I agree. It took Andersson 3 years from his draft to make it as a full timer player. Best case scenario you have maybe another year or two before the likes Poirier, Morin, and even Hunter (not even going to attempt that name before my morning hit of caffeine) are ready. You need at least 3 vets until you know what you have on the back end. At the end of the day if a couple of the prospects force their way up the lineup then you suddenly have a good problem to have and can trade from a position of strength.

I would rather sign Tanev to a 2 year deal (ideally trade, then re-sign this summer).
I agree we need a stable presence on D, but we need it on the right side more than the left.
Weegar
Hanafin
Kylington
Soloyov
Poirier
Gilbert
Remove Hanafin and we have multiple players ready to play LD.
Remove Tanev and we are left with Anderson along with warm bodies.
Trade Hanafin, re-sign Tanev.

I’m not buying the media in on it angle in this case. Normally Tanev would be worth a 2nd plus a bit given his oft injured history but this year he’s looking good. And given Monahan’s deal a few days ago, and the lack of alternatives on the market, he’s worth that first in my mind. I think certain media guys are just thinking of it in terms of skill set rather than supply demand and playoff value.

If Ben Chariot can get a 1st, Tanev can get a first.
I also would be happy with 2025 1st round picks from teams higher in the standings. Most of them likely face cap crunches, and wont be as good next season so the pick stands the change of being better.

One of Ottawa's picks is currently 32nd OA, if I'm not mistaken.
That pick seems to make sense, assuming Ottawa really does want Tanev.

Servalli cites the Josh Manson trade for why Tanev should return a 2nd rounder +.
Others have cited the David Savard and Ben Chiarot trades for why Tanev might return a 1st rounder+
All three trades had salary retention.

So the rentals and older player fetched more.
I think people look at his 9 points and don't understand the value he brings to the team.

Tanev has only missed and real time as a Flame last year, and his last year as Canuck he also played a full season. So really he's had one injury in the last 5 years.
The second last year as a Canuck, he did miss some time but it's funny - when you look at that Canucks team almost everyone got injured. Petterson, Boeser, Edler, Roussell all missed big chunks.
