That makes zero sense.

So anyone that's ever recovered from a horrific accident didn't have the injury in the first place?

That was a twitter handle and a reference to his dry interviewing style.

To me at least, calling someone glass seems to suggest he's soft, which the player wasn't.

Money that would likely have been spent on other players for no materially different result as a team.

Certainly, that's the nature of risk.

If it hadn't worked out, a lot of Habs fans would be asking why they paid $2 million for a guy who hasn't finished a season healthy since before the pandemic.

People are missing the fact he signed there as a UFA for $2M...that wasn't happening here

Really? $2 mill is 4th line money, very low risk. Doubt there would have been much of an outcry.

Treliving a poster boy for work hard, not smart.

Hardest working GM in the league. Maybe also the dumbest

Why is that? If the Flames don't trade him you don't think he would have entertained that offer from the Flames?

Or you're saying the Flames wouldn't have made such an offer?

I think you're missing the point that we could have done what MTL did, and been the ones trading him for a 1st today. He had one year left, and missed half that season, which would have just been LTIR.

We could have kept him, re-signed him for the same thing MTL signed him for, and then instead of paying a 1st to MTL, we would have kept that 1st and then got a 1st for him today. So when you include opportunity cost, we very much did give MTL two free 1sts (and a 3rd).

Now... having said that... I do like Kadri on our team, so that's really the only contention. Man, just imagine if we had flipped Huberdeau for picks/prospects/cap space, kept Weegar, signed Kadri and kept Monny.

I doubt he would have signed a low contract with the Flames, he said he needed a change when he left.

Obviously can't say for sure

Maybe, he could have signed elsewhere....what is Calgary's track record of keeping UFAs for bargain prices?? I mean he was a UFA they still could have signed him if he wanted back so bad.

Yeah exactly.

The original play ... trade for Monahan, bounce him back and get a first at last year's deadline completely went up in smoke for the Habs when Monahan broke his foot.

But then they resigned him and he bounced back and now they win the day.

Getting the first made it a smart gamble, they really couldn't lose. But the windfall today is more about him signing back than the trade itself.

In a typical year I would cheer for the Leafs over the Canucks but now the Leafs are only second to the Oilers for teams I do not want to win anything.
To be fair, and accurate, Conroy inherited 7 pending UFA’s and one pending RFA. I think it would be exceedingly rare for a new GM to inherit a team with no long term contracts on the books.

Conroy has actually walked into a pretty favourable position. He’s been able to make moves and has a decent set of young prospects.

Mike Grier, on the other hand, inherited a much much worse situation. Is Barry Trotz’s situation all that much more favourable? Dubas? Treliving with the Leafs?

Conroy’s situation ain’t all that bad.

I would easily trade Monahan and a late first for Kadri. Yes it is wonderful asset management for the habs. The flames will be in a position to take advantage of that scenario as well this offseason. Frankly they already did by getting Kuzmenko.

I'm not defending Brad at all, but it's easy to criticize with the benefit of hindsight. Monahan was a broken-down player at the time of the trade and his comeback to anything other than slow, ineffective fourth liner was far from certain. Good on Montreal, however!

Bit surprised at the return the Habs got for him - I think that shows that it is becoming a seller's market - finally some good news for the Flames.

Even with that return, shows pretty clearly how silly it was to suggest Monahan would return more than Lindholm.

As for the people illustrating the returns for the core, I think it looks like this:

Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Monahan, Lindholm --> Huberdeau, Weegar, Schwindt, Kuzmenko, Brzustewicz, Jurmo, 1st, 3/4th, $3M in cap space

Montreal also had a 10M goalie on LTIR that allowed them to do this....it wasn't shrewd planning to keep cap space open. I'm sure the Flames made him available to any team in the league, obviously nobody was going to do it for less. Like why didn't the Yotes do it if it was such an obvious win? Why didn't someone do it for a second?
