and for three, we could get some great assets back, imagine another 1st for him, Tanev, and Hanifin. Regardless of which year those picks are, thats a ton of ammo for a fast rebuild

Way more exciting...probably even for other fans after watching that 'draft'.

I was thinking Tanev would max out at a 2nd + prospect. I think he gets a 1st now

Imagine Tanev, Hanifin and Markstrom getting traded over the next few weeks

I wager Tanev goes today.
Someone's gonna get edge and want to seal the deal just like the Nucks did.

There's no guarantee he would make it to free agency and even if he does, will he choose Ottawa when there might be many other suitors offering him a better chance to win?
Acquiring him now and giving him a chance to get to know Ottawa and understand their vision for the future could give them a leg up in trying to sign him long-term.
I don't think it will happen, but there is an argument in favour of Ottawa making that move.

A selling point for Markstrom would be packaging a 50 percent retained Tanev with him who’s played with Marky forever and is already highly sought after. What could you get for Markstrom + 50% Tanev while also taking back a goalie contract??

I think trading them together hurts Tanev's value. Really limits potential buyers

Yea you "have" to keep them separate, if only to maximize 1st round picks.
Each would easily command their own 1st rounder this year based on what the prices are dictating.

The Devils have 9.4 in deadline cap because of Hamilton and Vanecek is 3.4 AAV this year and next. If the flames traded Marky and retained 50 on Tanev there could be something there, just depends on the devils and if they think they’re in the race still. I think trading them together could get you a blue chipper + 1st and 2nd along with some other things.

Here is what I am thinking:
1. Trade Tanev for 1st round pick
2. Trade Markstrom for 1st round pick + prospect
3. Trade Hanifin for 1st round pick + prospect + 2nd round pick + roster player
The Flames will then go into this 2024 draft with:
1st round picks (5)
2nd round picks (2)
3rd round pick (2) - if the Vancouver pick changes
With some of the trades above and these picks, they will restock their prospect cupboards significantly. If you can, package up some of those picks and end up with 2 Top 10 picks.
Next, suck again next year and get a Top 5 pick.
In 2025-26: You have a young and exciting team that is on the upswing (with still some veterans around in Kadri, Huberdeau, Weegar, Andersson)... and will be ready (if goes well) by the time the new arena opens.
All in all, if the Flames do this right, they can significantly jumpstart their re-tool/re-build.

A lot of the successful rebuild in the past did not include a team trading very valuable players for picks like this.
Edmonton and Pittsburgh got many top picks in a short time and got Crosby and McDavid in that time frame too, but they were rebuilding due to financial issues and poor management (Oilers). The teams were horrible, and they did not have a situation where they already had great prospects and tons and tons of picks.
Flames are set up very well. After all these trades, they still have some valuable vets, they could already have a top 10 prospect pool before all these picks pile in (assuming we get more good prospect in Hanifin trade and the addition of Brewski). Wranglers are an elite team too (part of the current prospects)
Conroy could be setting this team up for a dynasty if he makes the right moves and drafts well.

It’s rare to get franchise type players by trading rentals
You need to draft them high

I will believe it when we see it but I don't think Markstrom gets a 1st + prospect back. If that is the ask then he will finish his contract as a Flame

The key as always is to get a couple top picks. Flames still sit too high in the standings to get one right now.
But we did just trade Lindholm (didn't wait 6 more weeks)
If we trade Tanev now.
Still a chance we slide a bit.
Love to see Tanev to Ottawa, they could catch us. Playing much better of late.
