So assuming that Monahan would have re-signed with Calgary last year for one year, we would potentially have two more first round picks. And without Kadri's $7 million on the books, the ability to take on salary for more draft capital.
But that's a butterfly effect thing I guess. Who knows what the team would have done.
All I ask is that the team try to make a similar move to what Montreal did. Flames have $25M mill of cap space next year and lots of directions they could go. Will be very interesting.

Monahan was injured at the deadline in the year he was traded. I guess if you thought the Flames should have signed him in the offseason to do this then valid point lol

The way Treliving ran this team was comparable to how some of my friends ran their budgets. Superficially it looked like they were doing great, but their lifestyle is actually financed through ever increasing debt.
Happy to cheer for the Jets now, takes them from a who cares team to Go Monahan!

There is irony in here somewhere with Gio, Brodie, Monahan, Lindholm, Tkachuk all making the playoffs this year with other teams... yet the best player (2 years ago) Gaudreau will be fighting for a lottery pick again.

So I actually think that two of the big pieces of that outcome are gone in Sutter and Treliving.
The key remaining piece is Edwards.
Trading Toffoli, Zadorov, and Lindholm would indicate they aren't wasting assets anymore.

And seven freaking seasons of Kadri. If he was dangled I wonder what he would fetch today?

My only solace is that it makes the west better, and Edmonton's chance at the Cup worse.

I think Treliving was mostly a decent GM but desperation made him lose his mind after Johnny and Tkachuk wanted out.
But even then, most people thought the trades were solid in the moment. Maybe not what team rebuild (me) wanted, but as far as keeping the team competitive it looked like he made the best of it. Then everything went wrong.

If you packaged a first with him, you might get future considerations.

Well, no, not really.
It was a terrible trade at the time, but I don't think this changes much.
Monahan was again hurt last year and would have walked to free agency if he were a Flame. That much is a certainty.

Nothing lol. The trade was bad the day it was made. I don't really think this trade makes it much worse
