Thing is if the Flames are holding out for that type of return then they are being a bit foolish IMO.
Markstrom is 34 years old and has two years left after this one...you have capable goalies in Wolf and Vladar.
If you can get one piece that helps you long term in a retool then you should be making that trade.
I know they want an "exceptional offer" but that offer you quoted is way beyond an exceptional offer.
One true blue chip piece is an exceptional offer for a 34 year old goalie.

Thing is you might be more likely holding the bag.
Goalies are generally tough to move in the offseason. And just 4 months ago Markstrom value was seen as a bad contract cap dump, why take the risk that could happen again. You have a weird market right now where there are a lot of teams in playoff positions that are looking for goaltending.
Not being willing to move Markstrom when you have Wolf to me screams that you aren't not only taking a re-build seriously, but you're not even taking a re-tool seriously.
Selling high on Markstrom should be a huge priority right now if they can. If not before the deadline then they have to be listening seriously at the draft.

Again, you are looking at it like the Flames are shopping him trying to trade him, they aren't.
If Markstrom moves the price will be more reasonable in the offseason I believe.

I know we are less than 24 hours into a blockbuster trade that Conroy did a great job on… but I can’t help it now that one is done...

Arizona got a 1st, a 3rd and a 23 yr old dman who had played in the NHL and was drafted 32nd overall (a first rounder in today’s NHL) for a goalie (basically two firsts and a 3rd). And that happened less than 3 years ago
The Leafs got a 1st and a 2nd for a goalie.
Both those returns are better than a 1st and a 3rd.

Didn't someone tweet that Tanev should be the first domino to fall in the d-man market?
Hopefully there is momentum from this (league wide) and the next move comes soon.

True. Hard to really know what the market is for goalies right now as far as returns. I don’t think either of those goalies you mentioned were Markstrom’s age or had as big of a cap hit for as long. Another recent example, Fleury - one of the top goalies in NHL history who had just won the Vezina trophy - was given away as a cap dump by Vegas.

yeah, Lebrun said so. He also said that the Flames were looking for at least a 2nd and a prospect, and if a team offered a 1st now, they'd probably get him.

I imagine there are lots of 2nd + 3rd round pick offers out there for Tanev right now. Conroy might end up taking that as the return eventually… but, for now, he can wait till the TDL to give time for one of these teams to step up and offer them a 1st round pick.

Many weren't even happy when the Flames signed Tanev for free...now they want a big return after 4 years of great service

I'm not convinced the Flames see him that way. Conny didn't even mention him in that Sportsnet clip but brought up Rooney, Schwindt and even Pospisil! Although, it could be that he doesn't want to put pressure on Zary until they talk to him about it.

Why not? What people thought back then has no bearing on what the market is for him now.

If I thought I was a surefire #1 starting goalie away from competing for the cup for next couple years I would ya. Markstrom isn't a rental so they would have multiple years of him behind that team in their prime. This is EXACTLY what NJ and Carolina should be looking at during this window.

Anderson was younger but signed for longer at a higher percentage of the cap.
Kuemper was younger and signed for shorter and for less cap
(Both of those statements are assuming that the Flames do not eat any of the Markstrom cap)
Fleury was a straight cap dump because the Knights were way over the cap. They had to get rid of the salary.

And? If you’d told anyone then that we would trade Lindholm to the Canucks you’d have gotten stabbed in the face with a soldering iron. Now everyone’s over the moon. Things change.

I know this will be very difficult for you to understand, but people can change their opinions when presented with new evidence, and it doesn't hurt anyone to do so. Rather, it is healthy and beneficial for society when people take in new information and use it to modify their views.

It’s possible. I do hope he gets a chance at center… up to this point he has been developed as a center. However, I have noticed how solid he is along the walls both in the offensive end and in his own end. He’s very good at handling pressure when the puck is ran along the boards to him in his own end. And he does a great job turning that into a play rather than struggling to get it out. It’s a quality of good wingers in the NHL (Gaudreau and Tkachuk were also good at that). At the same time, he does look good handling the puck up the middle of the ice like a centerman. He weaves well through the traffic and gains zones pretty good when given the opportunity.

Part of the appeal around Zary when we drafted him was that he was a center.
I don't think we should abandon that aspect just cause he broke into the league on Kadri's wing.

I believe Conroy, Huska or someone in management had publicly stated that they saw him as a winger before this season. He wasn't inserted into the lineup on the wing because there wasn't a spot for him down the middle. That is/was their plan. Which could change due to necessity, I guess.

No doubt, especially if the Flames retained on him.
