Just catching up on Connie interviews - I actually always enjoyed Tre interviews post transactions, but, golly gee, how can you not smile when listening to Conroy.

Maybe for Markstrom, that seems hopeful for Tanev.

It may, but the Western conference arms race has started with Vancouver grabbing Lindholm. Trade deadline does some crazy things to GMs.

Even if there's no prospect added on, if Conroy can get a 1st for Tanev, I take it and run.

Time for Conroy to get Machiavellian!
With the Flames where they are, and the assets they have, they, Conroy can play kingmaker.
Trade Blake Coleman and Tanev (both full retention), as a package.
Who among the contenders wouldn't drool over that?

Unfortunately, I don't think the Flames make a trade retaining salary on anyone.
Doesn't seem very Murray Edwards to me.

I think a first round pick (lottery protected but no other conditions) should get it done for Tanev. Considering how many teams are interested in him, that’s a reasonable ask. Not sure if you could get much of a prospect back. I’d be happy with just the first round pick… that’s a great return on Tanev.

I’m not so sure; Conny is proving early on he has the capabilities to be pretty savvy and when he traded Zad without retaining he mentioned at the time how important deadline cap space can be and how it can be potentially utilized, the fact that we didn’t retain on Lindy could prove extremely valuable as we get close to the deadline. I wouldn’t put it past GMCC to convince Edwards to retain, especially on UFA contracts, I do think it’s less likely we see it applied to any contract with years left past this season though.
Impress us again Conroy!

Love hearing how many teams are interested in Tanev. Could be heading into the draft with 3 1st round picks, how nice would that be?

I also think the rumors of Treliving standing pat, is a plant. He has little draft capital immediately to work with and probably doesn’t want to come across as desperate. No way a team with Matthews, Marner and Nylander as your prime core, doesn’t push for adding. Especially when the GM is new, had high expectations and can’t afford to have the fan base turn on him. If I were to guess one of his better prospects is traded for a defenceman when his posturing are ego are checked. One thing is Treliving trades with the people he tends to know. And we have two d. I still think it’s possible.

Man... We have only two defensemen (Weegar and Andersson) signed for next year... crazy.

Exactly which makes me think twice about moving Markstrom. Do we really want to throw Wolf out there (I resisted the obvious) with a weak defense? Same thing sort of applies to Kadri (though I highly doubt anybody would want him anyway) in that who is down the middle? Kadri has worked very well with the two young guys on his line. We can't just ice a whole team of young guys we will kill their confidence.

I think part of the reason Conroy went with the Zadorov trade offer he did was it was the only one that didn't involve the Flames retaining salary. So partly that's ammunition for my perspective that I don't know if we retain on anyone... but also there's probably other potential deals where retaining salary would significantly sweeten the offer moreso than on Zadorov. And you can't retain on more than 3 contracts as well.
We'll see.

That makes sense to me. I had read that Tanev was originally part of the VCR deal and the return was another 1st but Calgary thought they could get better by dealing him separately.
How good that prospect would be remains to be seen. Probably more of a 'B' level prospect.

I’m hoping, too, that we trade Hanifin to Boston for what the perceived package was from them for Lindy. Pipe dream I know but still, if we landed a first this year with Tanev and Hanny to Boston went down it would be 3 1sts this year and 2 next. Humana Humana lol.
Plus Frederic would be a massive get, I think he’s been underrated and finally seems to be breaking out a bit this year which is good to see.

Right, definitely not a definitive route with regards to salary retention but teams looking to add try to squeeze every dollar they can out of deadline cap space and with Conroy sitting with 3 retention spots still at his disposal I can’t help but drool a bit lol. How refreshing to finally see this team commit to adding assets through the draft/draft capital.

Retaining 50% on UFA Lindholm at this point would be pennies compared to taking on Kuzmenko's salary for this and next year. I think people are looking at the wrong thing, they actually did better than retaining on Lindholm's salary. May as well save the slot if you think you're going to sell more.

I was just about to say that there’s been rumblings for the last month or two that LA might want to trade Kaliyev, and that he needs a change. Can’t say I’m a big Kaliyev fan, or more specifically- a fan of his skating. Pretty one-dimensional too, IMO.

He probably circles back in 3 months and re-signs in Calgary too.
