Ottawa Sun (Garrioch) also mentioned that according to league sources, the asking price on Tanev is a 1st round pick plus a prospect.

As it should be.
If LA has entered the mix it would be pretty awesome to get a 1st + Turcotte.

Which completely makes sense - that is exactly what the Flames should be asking for, and we'll see which team is desperate enough to meet it or come the closest to it.
IMO, the baseline minimum for him would be a 2nd and a 3rd, but that would be a disappointment, and I don't see any reason why they won't get a 1st plus a decent (not great) prospect.

The Canucks probably offered a 2nd and a 3rd for Tanev, and Conroy figured he could do better.

The dearth of RHD available in the league puts Tanev at a premium.
Great situation for Conroy to cash in.
To recoup 2+ 1st round picks between Hanifin and Tanev, plus prospect capital, this is the exact situation where we can expedite a rebuild.
Early days, but there's light at the end of the tunnel with these types of moves.

Still need bodies, and Kuzmenko should have better value at next years deadline (assuming he sees a production bump with better offensive opportunities here vs VAN).
Also Conroy had to sell Kuzmenko on his playing time here in order to convince him to waive his NTC. Would be awful for a rookie GM to do that, then go back on his word mere weeks later and trade the guy.

Do we know conroy gave his word? Maybe he was like, we will try flip you onto a playoff team so you can rack up point next season and sign a big deal.

Give Kuz premium offensive time, and pump his value to move next year. No sense moving him now.

Agreed. Kuzmenko is finishing the year, at the least, on the roster.

Selfishly... I kind of want the Flames to keep/extend Tanev (so long as the term is reasonable). I like him as a stabilizing figure on the 2nd pairing with Kylington for next year (assuming they extend Kylington as well).
Man... We have only two defensemen (Weegar and Andersson) signed for next year... crazy.

Yeah, pretty much. If he has a strong finish to the year I could see moving him at the draft but he's not going to be an immediate/in-season flip.

Yep, I don't think he's blocking anyone's development, and it's not like we're going to be competitive over the next two seasons. Why dump him when his value is basically at the lowest it's probably ever going to be.

Agreed. When you think about it there are other names the flames could entertain too, who don’t fit into the long term picture but could get some value. I’d primarily put Backlund in that mix. And I would try to deal Kadri for value. Perhaps Kadri could be kept until next deadline when one less year is on his contract.

Wow! Conroy shooting for the stars here. If there are 11 teams in the mix, as suggested, Tanev may generate that return. Someone is going to get desperate. I think the Lindholm trade will get the skids greased.

Tanev is a stud. I hope they trade him to a team I like.

I imagine the Lindholm trade will want to make other players leave as well. Hanifin seemed interested in staying here long term if the Flames looked like they were going to be a good team again. He broke-off negotiations during the season on a down-swing, no? Unless the Flames offer him something stupid (lie 10 million a season), then he probably wouldn't be interested in extending here any longer.
Who wants to sign on rebuilding teams? Only two types of vets do - 'last chance' vets and reclamation types, or vastly overpaid types (like Chicago did with Perry and Foligno. A vet has to have a very strong history with a squad to want to stay through a rebuild - think Doan with Phoenix. Backlund comes closest to that, but even he almost didn't re-sign here. I genuinely believe that Hanifin enjoyed playing in Calgary, and that it isn't a Calgary thing, or a Canadian thing. He was drafted in Carolina and has already moved once, so why extend with a team that will probably not be fun to play in for at least a couple of seasons?
Hanifin and Tanev are gone in my mind. Markstrom is the bigger question mark for me. He apparently loves living in Western Canada. Maybe Colorado would offer him what he loves? However, his buddy Lindholm is gone now, Tanev is going soon, and this team probably won't be a great place to play for a couple of seasons, at which point his contract will run out. I can see him staying for the rest of the season, and then moving in the off-season, or I can see him agreeing to go somewhere by the deadline too. I can't imagine he will want to stay through this if given the choice.
It will be interesting to see who else Conroy moves. I think Markstrom will be the only guy with term moving. Kadri back to Colorado makes sense to me, but that's a big contract to fit-in for them, so I would be very surprised if that happened. Coleman makes sense for any contender, but that's 3 more years. Sharangovich is actually fairly easy to move - an opportunity can be had to 'sell high', but he is also young enough that you can just keep, or at least wait until next deadline to see where his appetite is at with contract negotiations. Greer probably goes for a late pick I am guessing.
I think one of the bigger questions is what they will end up doing with Kylington? Does he want to re-sign in Calgary? Does he want to play through a rebuild? Maybe he actually prefers a fresh start somewhere else and put his past behind him, even though Calgary was supportive. Who knows? He is an upcoming UFA like everyone else, and with more or less a formal declaration of this team kick-starting a rebuild (of sorts anyway), maybe he wants to go elsewhere too?

Tanev is right-handed and one tough customer ... he's a dream addition for any contender. He may not get a 1st and a prospect when all is said and done, but Conroy is right to ask.
Ben Chiarot was traded two years ago and fetched a 1st, a 4th and a prospect as a rental. I would argue Tanev is a more valuable addition to a contender than Chiarot was.
