Shame they didn't proof-read. "Calgary discards plastic bag bylaw after single use."

The pollution and energy expenditure from making plastic and cloth reusable bags happens over in China, so we're okay, air doesn't circulate or anything. Clearly council couldn't think of anything not stupid to do with their time and our money, so they did something the dumbest way possible.

Using your brain would have lead you to realising you could just not use a bag at all.

It's funny who keeps resorting to personal attacks when they have nothing of substance or value to contribute. I keep my attacks at council, while you direct them at me.
Next time you order drive-thru, take a sheet of printer paper and place it on your seat, then place your drive-thru items on top.
If that piece of paper is in such a condition after that you would not use it to print the cover letter of your CV, then you'll understand why I want a bag and not to put that stuff directly on my seats.

You mocked me for making a genuine contribution regarding the value of this, right? Just checking so I can properly assess how much substance and value you’re contributing.
If you need a bag, buy a bag. If you don’t, don’t. Pretty simple and you don’t have to do a paper test to figure out whether you need a bag or not.

If this was such a smart idea and good decision then businesses, stores and restaurants would have implemented it already across all their locations and would be happy to make the extra revenue while promoting the reduction in bags in their annual ESG reports.

Buying a compostable bag at checkout is what we used to be able to do. It seemed to work well. Most people brought their own reusable bags, but compostable ones were available for a charge if you didn’t have one. If we could still do that, I doubt anyone would be complaining.

Probably not since we’ve seen that people throw apoplectic fits over being charged 15 cents for a bag.
Generally not good for business.

You be just missed the entire point though. It’s not the $0.15 that rises to $0.25 next year. It’s things like you not being able to have a bag unless you ask otherwise the business can be charged $250. So, you go go through drive thru or order for pick-up a couple McRibs, some fries, a Big Mac and a round of apple pies. No one cares about the extra $0.15, or $0.30. But when they get handed everything individually it’s completely stupid.
Sure, the business could pre-emptively put that in a bag like any rational service industry would do. After all, we all know that no one is bringing a bag for this kind of thing. But of course that’s against the bylaw and the customer has to ask. Same for condiments, napkins, utensils.

It’s almost like if you’re going to order a lot of food you should splurge on a bag.

Sure, what am I thinking? It’s a brilliant piece of legislation with no issues at all.

I’m probably in the minority, but i don’t think it goes far enough. You want a container for your fries, 15 cents. you want us to wrap your burger, 15 cents, you want a cup for that drink, 15 cents…
I envision a utopia where we all just pull up to a window and someone hands you a fistful of fries, an unwrapped burger and they just spray the drink directly into your mouth.

Well, you’re kind of grasping at the most odd edge-cases that are easily solvable by taking 5 seconds to think about.
Like, “what if I send my self-driving car to get 20 sloppy burgers and milkshakes and I am not there to ask for a bag?? Then what??!”
Do you have any real-world issues with it, that can’t be solved with a minute amount of thinking?

Been doing it for a few years now. Just keep some in the car, and usually keep one or two rolled up in my pocket while grocery shopping.
The McDonald's thing is a head scratcher, but I'm assuming you can pay 0.15 cents for a bag while in the drive-through for your $15 meal of calories so perhaps it's not a big deal?

When I order more than two drinks I ask for a tray. Sometimes I do this right away, sometimes I do this when they try to hand me the third drink without a tray and I realize “right, ####, I need a tray.”
The times I get ketchup in the bag when I don’t ask? Maybe 20%.
But I’m supposed to believe having to ask for something is completely stupid when I’ve ordered too many apple pies. Genius.

Who in this thread is throwing a fit?
Being charged 15 cents for a bag at the grocery store is the system we had three months ago. Now those bags have been removed. Try to keep up.

I recall with you leading with something about how we're children for thinking this is a stupid bylaw? Then you said it made you think twice about a bag. I said that what was contributed doesn't answer the question of how the bylaw actually solves a real problem when usable bags -- what the bylaw is trying to push people toward -- are still the worst answer environmentally when you look at the energy and environmental impact of their lifecycle relative to compostable paper.
