i know it would hurt our draft position but if the Flames could somehow make the playoffs after selling off all of the UFAs i would be super pumped.

Can't do conditions like that anymore. NHLPA forbode it.

A very solid start to a possible reload.
Plus it's a very dmen heavy draft this year in the first round and you're likely to have 3-4 first round picks.

If the can get a strong Center prospect in the Hanifin or Tanev deals then I think it would be an amazing start

So who is playing bottom 6 center for the Flames after the all-star break? Lots of guys for the wing spots but there’s nobody established down the middle. Maybe Rooney is ready to come lead the tank.

I still think it’s unlikely the flames trade Markstrom this year. Not because they refuse to or because they are trying to make the playoffs but because I don’t think a team will step up and pay the price.

The team that needs goaltending the most right now is Los Angeles IMO. The problem is, they might face Edmonton in the playoffs and the Oilers are Markstrom’s kryptonite... so I don’t think the Kings would be a team willing to pay much if anything for him.

If New Jersey weren’t so injured up front and were still in a playoff spot, I could see them as a real option for him. If they somehow got on a run and were in a playoff spot and thought they would be healthy enough come playoffs, they might be willing to get Markstrom to stabilize that position both now and for the next couple seasons as they start to enter their competitive window.

Colorado’s goaltending seems to be doing better and they are too cap-strapped to fit him in over the next few years I think.

I struggle to think of any other teams that are in/near the playoffs that would be looking for a top goaltender and willing to pay a steep price for him.

It’s a hedge.

I think I’d prefer the higher 1st.

Kuzmenko is exactly what was lacking on a line with Huberdeau. Someone who could think the offensive game at a higher level. The interesting part is going to be who ends up centering a line, like that.

It would have to prioritize defensive acumen, and be able to maintain control of the puck. Every other skill becomes secondary.

Do you look for that kind of player as an add-on in a Tanev or Hanafin trade?

Adding a couple young D in our system is huge.

I would love to snag Bourque in a Hanifin deal.

Who are the potential hanifin buys and what other young/prospect centers could we get for Hanifin?

Dallas and Detroit?

Doesn't feel like we've heard much about potential trade partners for him.

Detroit could definitely use him but they would be a team that likely would only trade for him if he would sign an extension because they are not at the expensive rental stage of their competitive window. But totally possible Hanifin would be willing to sign with Detroit. Pretty close to home. Young up and coming team with a good GM and a recently new arena that’s only a few years old. Could get a very good return from Detroit in that circumstance but I think it’s tough to get Hanifin to commit to anywhere right now. Probably wants to go free agency especially in an offseason where the cap is about to go up.

Dallas could use a defenceman but someone pointed out that they have lots of left-handed defencemen already and what they really need is a right-handed shutdown D-man. Luckily we have one of those to offer as well. Won’t get us Bourque but I would take their first round pick for Tanev.

A couple days ago, Friedman said the Blackhawks were interested in Kuzmenko. They want to add scoring without too much term. Wonder if there is another move here

Yeah I forgot about that.

I wonder if they were just interested if they could get him for future considerations or if they would give up decent assets for him.

I have no idea how much he's worth. If all you can get back is loke a 5th you may as well keep him.

Several people have brought up the lack of retention of the any of the trades from Conroy so far… I wonder if he’s keeping a retention spot for moving a player with term? If you want to maximize value, using a retention spot on someone like that could be a game changer in terms of value. For example, Coleman is likely at his highest value production-wise right now… but his $4.9 million AAV for 3 more years makes that a tough trade to make. If flames management and ownership were willing to bite the bullet on retaining half of his salary, what does his return at the TDL look like? Proven playoff performer and two-time Stanley cup champion having the best offensive season of his life.

Take a team like Dallas and let’s up the return even higher by including Tanev also at 50% retained.

To Dallas:
Coleman (50% retained)
Tanev (50% retained)

To Calgary:
2024 1st round pick
Mavrik Bourque
Conditional 2024 3rd round pick (becomes a 2nd round pick if they make it to the WCF).

Who says no? Besides the obvious answer of Flames ownership (which I’m very certain would say no).

Retaining on Coleman and Markstrom is likely the only way you're getting significant assets back. I'd love for them to make moves like that but not so sure they would. It would be a smart strategic move though to maximize assets.

Unless a team blows you out of the water, I just dont see Coleman moving. Have that conversation in the summer.

I do wonder how the rest of the league views Mangiapane these days. A team looking for some scoring depth could be poking around a guy like him. With maximum retention, he could be an attractive piece.

Ever since he got his payday, he just seems like he's in no mans land. He's young, so do the Flames consider him a warm body for the rebuild? Hard to say. He was such a hot commodity coming off his 30 goals season, and his performance at the Worlds.

I think so. Hanifin would be a deadline day thing I think. But now that the Flames have dropped the gate, teams are going to ramp up movement.

You’re probably right about Coleman being unlikely to be traded. The only problem with the flames having that conversation in the summer is that his value is at its highest right now. There will be likely less of a market for him in July when teams will write off his production as an outlier and focus more on his age/contract. Teams acquiring him right now would value what he brings to a playoff run especially with him playing his best hockey this season. They will look at his remaining contract as less of an issue or something to worry about later… especially a team that’s trying to go deep in the playoffs.

I see this being the case.

Tanev traded not too far down the line then Hanifin either inks an extension or is traded at the 11th hour.

This is definitely a huge domino to fall. I wouldn't hate teams spicing up a normally borish all-star break with some moves.
