I'd do that Markstorm deal. Mostly because it seems like goaltenders don't tend to net a huge return in trades. And would anyone be surprised if Markstrom took a step back next year and we're hoping to trade him for anything?
...but it would really help our draft pick this year.

So potentially 5 first round picks this year? That would be insane but I’m all for it. Gotta think one or 2 could be used to move up, or flipped for a young 22-24 year old

That pick right now (with where the devils are set to pick) could likely get the flames Iginla in the draft. Plus it saves the flames cap space over the next two seasons. And it’s been a long time since a 30+ year old goalie returned a first round pick in the top 20 of a draft.

Unlikely to get a first and a recent first round pick. The 1st+2nd is completely reasonable.
Edit- In reading about this from the Dallas side, I'm not sure they actually look to make this deal unless they're okay with having their top four d mean all be lefties. Seems unlikely in the modern NHL.

Good goalies just don't fetch as much as you think. Vanacek will come back for obvious reasons but unless New Jersey is willing to massively over pay in a season they have seriously struggled with injury and scandal, I don't see two picks going with him. I don't see a 1st either. Probably the only trade that is an outright no.

Not happening unless they get someone like Guentzel or Henrique for a song.
The D core upgrade is a "Would like."
The top six upgrade is a "Must have."

You are ignoring a few things here. If the Devils land Markstrom they are not finishing as bad as they are now. The second thing is the Flames don't want to move Markstrom nor does Markstrom want to move either, at least not during the season. It doesn't matter what goalies have gone for in the past, it will take an overpayment for Conroy to even open the discussion with him. It is like if I have a classic car I love and don't want to sell it but you desperately want it. Make me an offer I can't refuse. While Markstrom does have solid value out there in the trade market I don't see anyone ponying up the assets it will take to get the ball rolling.

If the Devils could get Markstrom for that they would do it in a heartbeat.

Yet some were suggesting it would take a 1st and maybe more on our side just to get rid of him only 4-5 months ago. Conroy needs to consider this as well, if he gets a solid offer he should at least ask if Markstrom is interested in moving to that team.

I don't think they would. You have to remember, teams will often emulate recent cup winners. Colorado and Vegas have both won cups with guys who have not been highly thought of. New Jersey has to look at their roster and say "Get an NHL average goaltender who doesn't play below that average and can step up here and there and we're golden." Then take the cap savings and spend on other areas.

Even though a fair number of posters overreacted last summer on what we could do to get rid of Markstrom, Markstrom has been here 4 years and 2 of the 4 he's been worth a lot in a trade (this year is 1).
They other 2, 1 year he was so bad people thought he would never bounce back. They other was his first year, most were saying it was a bad move to sign him.
Conroy can't afford to wait on trading Markstrom. IMO him and the UFAs need to move, if possible, at minimum. If he refuses to waive then we are stuck, but I think if we get a good offer Conroy needs to approach him.

See the way I see it what Wolf needs more then anything is consistent and plentiful NHL reps... he needs to get games in, Markstrom blocks that. Go sign a guy like Jaro Halak (maybe not Halak specifically but someone like him) to back him up if you just want a mentor for Wolf.

Since the season is essentially lost after that recent skid I'm all for trading markstrom.
One of the very few things that would keep me tuning in is Wolf sharing 1A/B duties with Vladar and Pelletier/Poirier getting reps.
I'm far less interested in watching markstrom get the lions share (for faint hope of playoffs) and going god mode behind a line up of guys clearly just playing out the string.
Didn't watch the Chicago game but by the sounds of it it was pretty brutal from the home guys even for a W. No one needs to watch 30+ more games of that.
Go full kid line up and give them all the opportunity to showcase their potential moving forward.
Oh and fleece a GM or two while you're at it.

The scarcity of RHD who can play in the top 4 makes them valuable at the deadline. I think Tanev is more likely to wind up in DAL than Hanifin. If we’re assuming they’re both pure rentals, it actually wouldn’t surprise me if Tanev returned more than Hanifin at the deadline because of the LHD/RHD factor.

Generally I would agree with this but goalies have been make or break a team lately, and the most recent cup winner was from a goalie that went on a hot streak and never looked back. He was also on meh teams until Vegas. Markstrom on a contending team is a much better team. Goaltending value is always going to be all over the place though, just because of the volatility of the position as is.

Sounds like a good mix of some posters saying that package I proposed for Markstrom is too much and some saying it is too little. My guess is the price I’m proposing is probably close to what Conroy is asking but teams likely won’t pay that much for a goalie that’s signed to $6 million for two years after this one.

This trade IMO tells teams not to trifle with Craig.
Those fence sitters and tire kicking GMs are going to hate it when they run out of centre depth in the playoffs.
Chapeau, Craig!

Was Tanev not included because they had another deal lined up already, or was it wait and see?

From the way reporters have been phrasing it, I'm thinking they have other offers coming in that they think might be better.
