Why not just re-sign Lindholm if that's the plan?

Hey, I'm just the messenger. Perhaps Lindholm isn't going to sign regardless. So they could be looking at comparable players. Who knows.

For where this team is likely going to be next year… I really don’t think they need to target any top six forwards or even centermen in trades or free agency. I would like to see them transition Zary to the centre ice position at the NHL level as early as this season once Lindholm is traded. Go with Kadri-Backlund-Zary as the top 3 centres next year. Give Zary the protected matchups that Kadri has been given this year. You could look for a free agent centremen willing to sign a 1 year deal that could fill in as the fourth line centre or you could give a shot to Schwindt or Bishop.

I could see Lindholm re signing in the summer.
I don't the offers out there will be very good for him (pending what he shows on a new team post trade).

With Hart's career likely over and Cal Petersen not living up to his $5 million contract, I wonder how much of a premium the Flyers would be willing to pay to swap Petersen and Markstrom? They have 2 firsts and 2 seconds in this year's draft.
The Flames could buy out Petersen in the summer. His buyout is reasonable, only $1 million next year and $2 million the next.

Depending on whether the Flyers think they are a contender or not? Personally I don’t think they are so I don’t think they would spend their future on Markstrom

I still think someone will give him around a 7.5-8 million x 7.
He's probably cost himself 10-15 million by not re-sisgning with the flames rumored 8x8.5.
He may come out close to even if he goes to a market with an advantageous tax situation though.
Kadri being a low end comparable and horvat/scheifele being high ends. Then you account abit for cap increase.

This is the #### that worries me about this organization..

Question: what's the mood in Calgary right now given where they are in the standings?
I don't think that what's happened year has really changed a lot in terms of what their philosophies were. I think it comes down to what do the players involved want, like a lot of these players because their contracts are up or because they have no trade Clauses, they have control over where they're going.
|
This reflects what Don Maloney said during his last intermission interview a couple weeks ago. It sounds like they would love to bring these guys back but it's in the players hands. This is extremely worrisome. They're fine with how things are and they'd love to keep the band together if they could.

do you just live in fear at all times? relax
Why would the Flames report they want to move all these players? I promise you the Flames want to and are trading Lindholm

Yeah, this is alarming:
“I don't think that what's happened year has really changed a lot in terms of what their philosophies were.”
If their philosophy is truthfully rooted in anything near what they’ve conveyed publicly, good grief.

I would be pretty perplexing for the Flames to decide their long-term strategy based on whether Hanifin or Lindholm want to re-sign. I don't know why their so hell-bent on keeping the band together.
I feel like discussions of Hanifin re-signing and then talks breaking off have already been had three times during the season already.
If the Flames can't see the writing on the wall, they are willfully avoiding it.

I think it is more posturing. They would have kept Zadorov and Toffoli if there was no change in philosophy. I’ll get mad if they don’t trade the UFAs but I don’t see it

A little more detail
- He speculates the flames have asked Hanifin to inform them of whether he sees a future in Calgary over the all star break
- Big market for Tanev
- Lindholm. Ton of interest including Vancouver, Colorado. Does think he will be traded
- Markstrom - he does not like being involved in speculation. Bothers him. Because of that there is unwritten agreement they won't ask him to waive unless they have a trade offer really good or he say she wants to go. He just wants to play.
Nothing really new but also nothing really alarming.

So Friedman basically confirms that the Flames are moving two UFAs and want the youngest one to confirm with them whether he sees a future in Calgary. If he does they may try to sign him and if he does not they will trade him. Is that what Friedman said is the philosophy because if so it would be the same philosophy since Conroy became GM.

Sounds like Lindholm is the Rangers #1 target. 1st and Kakko maybe?

I would interpret that as the results of the philosophy and not the philosophy itself.
The philosophy appears to be:
1. Don't lose any players for free.
1.1 Try and sign player
1.2 If player won't sign then trade the player
2. Get younger
3. Stay competitive
It seems that if Lindholm was willing to re-sign they would be interested in re-signing him. Alas, he is not.
I like most of the philosophy. I dont like 1.1.

Kaapo Kakko would be the best name on the team since Jyrki Jokipakka

I'd do it. Kakko has a bit of runway left and hasn't been developed well. Worth the risk imo.

I'd really like to find a way to Land Breaden Schneider from the Rags too.
Edit : If I recall properly, that's who the Rangers took when the Flames traded down for Zary?
