I was reading on I think the Athletic, how goaltending has changed in Canada, and why we don't have great goaltenders anymore, and a lot of experts seem to agree that because goalies are bigger, and equipment is the way it is, they are trained to just block the puck instead of making and actual save.


Wolf may have his size against him, but it also might make him a better goaltender since he needs to make a save instead of just being in the right place. It could also make him wear down quicker in the long-term.

But that doesn't indicate a trend of how NHL teams view goalies going forward. Drafting does.

And still 3 of 8 being below average height isn't really indicative of much. The winner Ullmark is 6'5", the first runner up Sorokin 6'3", second runner up Hellebuyck 6'4", 4th runner up Oettinger 6'5", 5th runner up Vasilevsky 6'5". Only Saros cracked the top 5.

Are they, though? Just because Saros has had some success, this does not suddenly level the playing field. Big, mobile goalies still—and likely always will—have an advantage. This doesn't mean that Wolf won't be a solid NHL goalie; but, it also doesn't mean that he will, nor that players in the position will be smaller over time.

There is still a long, LONG way to go before we can be confident that Wolf will be a NHL regular. The road ahead for him is not easy.

Great AHL stats suggest the player had a chance.

The Capitals believed the same or they wouldn't have signed him.

I was never on the Phillips is being held back bandwagon but to suggest he had a chance was never a homer take.

Just because they ended up being wrong, doesn't mean the decision to give him a chance was a poor one. Minimal risk for potential reward.

Of course managing in hindsight is much easier.

And the Flames also made a low risk offer which would have seen him have a chance in the future as well IMO.

Two organizations have observed him. The Flames decided it wasn’t in the cards without much NHL playing time. The Capitals decided to give him a chance with actual NHL playing time. With 1 goal and 5 points in 26 games he’s probably not providing per the role he should be slotting into. Which is to generate offence.

Doesn't really hurt to give him a shot. Sometimes you find a Carter verhaege or Michael Carcone. Most of the time, you don't.
