I’m expecting a late 1st and a prospect for Lindy at this point

He's mentally checked out, wants nothing to do with CGY anymore and part of why he should of been traded before the season started.
Just a huge distraction.

The Monahan trade gets more embarrassing the for the organization every time I think about it. If you were going to give away the 1st, Lucic was basically on the same cap hit, but I'm thinking Lucic, a lesser player could have been given away for much less given the future contract prospects and real dollars owed, and Monahan anyway you look at it would have been a useful entity for continuity in a retooling, and now apparently would have been an asset for kicking off this rebuild.
I still wish Monny were here.

Frank Seravailli has no clue IMO.
He said he thinks Monahan is more valuable than Tanev...which I really don't see any GM thinking right now.
Earlier this week he was saying the Hart and Dube leave of abscences weren't related to the WJC scandal.
Maybe there is a chance that Monahan returns a 1st, and it could be a competitive market because of his low salary, but I do think that overall the more likely return for him would be a 2nd.
Also people have to remember the Flames likely aren't getting that return even if we don't make the trade. He was a UFA last year and returned to Montreal on a one year show me deal specifically for a "pump and dump" season like he's having. Probably wouldn't have been the case in Calgary.
Moving a 1st to get rid of one year of him was always terrible though.

The Flames made attempts to move Lucic and they fell through at the last minute.
I agree the Monahan deal was bad though.

Honestly I don't think that guy actually has a clue.

I think Seravalli is just playing the mouthpiece for a GM to try and raise Monahan's value.

Lucic had an NMC and could veto any trade. The Flames tried to move him, but could not find a taker that he would accept.

The Flames weren't the only team that got bent over trying to clear cap space.

Montreal wants a 1st for Monahan. They're ####ing high. They might get a desperate team who misses out on guys like Guentzel or Lindholm and panic. I don't see it.

I mean why not ask for a first? I wouldn't be suprised if they settle on a 3rd though. Perhaps a 2nd if there are a couple teams bidding

I could see it being similar to what we paid for Jarnkrok being a 2nd + 3rd.

They're going to get a 3rd and/or a 4th for him near the 3pm EST deadline on the day of.
Monahan was a mirage created by his line mates at his peak, and Montreal thinks people are going to pay for him like this hot streak now is real? Nevermind the fact a stiff breeze could see him explode like a crash test dummy.

Honest question here but do you (or anybody) think these tactics are effective? I figure GM's would see through this quite easily and rely on their own pro scouting.
That said, I feel like GM's biggest reason to use media to leak anything would be to gauge fan sentiment in the event that a potentially popular player were to be traded.
I'd love to spend a day with Craig Conroy.

Negotiating through the press is a long time tradition in sports.

I don't think it's crazy that Monahan gets a late 1st.
He's on pace for 22 goals/58 points. His defensive game is solid. He's really strong in the dot. He's a well liked vet.
His sh% isn't inflated at all.
He put up similar pace last season.
If you've watched him, he's playing with passion and going into the tough areas.
He's been a solid playoff performer.
The biggest red flag is his injury history. But the team acquiring him is doing so as a rental so that doesn't really matter.
He's also making 1.95m. A team can get him for close to league minimum.
I think Seravalli is full of #### though saying Monahan is worth more then Tanev. If Monahan can fetch a 1st, Tanev can also get a 1st.
I could see it being a conditional 1st, based on getting past the first round or something

His defensive game isn't very solid and I think that will be the issue for most teams looking to trade for him.

Agreed. I just wonder if it actually works. If its that easy for you or I to see through, it likely doesn't have a lot of benefit.

Somehow Chiarot was traded for a 1st+ and when the rumours came out that the Canadiens would be expecting a 1st+ for him, it never made sense to me.
It still doesn't make sense to me.

From stats to the eye test he looks fine to me.
I'm open to having my mind changed though, so I'll put the onus on you to prove it.
Otherwise we will have to agree to disagree.
