Time to sit Oesterle and let one of the young guys in the AHL play - I liked what I saw in Solovyov

Greer was a nice find but is at best a 4th line player. On a better team he may not be in the lineup regularly. He plays about 8 minutes a game.

I don’t think too much of Valimaki but a team ahead of the Flames in the standings, that gives up fewer goals, has him in top 4 of icetime for defensemen, so probably not bad for $1 Million AAV.

Yeah, I think that would be a great idea. Better for our two young Russian defence men to get lots and lots of minutes when the pressure is off so that they can be ready to go next season.

I don’t know how anyone can look at this season as anything other than a right off at this point. The best way to salvage it is to use the rest of the games as development time for the rookies.

Plus, have them learn as much as possible from the UFA defenceman we’re about to lose, while they still can.

He made 1.5 with the Flames...the Yotes loved him so much they cut his salary by 1/3 this season. And the Yotes have 1 points on the Flames? Neither are playoff teams. He's not the one that got away.

Solo is Belarussian, just like Sharky.

I agree on the rest.

He played 61 regular season games and 9 playoff games for the record-setting President’s Trophy winning Boston Bruins.

Not sure how much “better team” you can get than that.

Top 4-5 per game. Also a guy they healthy scratch for weeks at a time.

Greer actually had time in the top 9 this year.

The numbers are what they are and I don’t know that Valimaki has been healthy scratched for weeks at a time. He has played 33 games and I believe he was injured legitimately. How healthy was he in the games he was scratched?

And Greer plays 8 minutes a night. Yeah he played on the Bruins last year. They waived him.

Greer on his 4th team, Valimaki his second. Neither look to be sure fire NHL regulars to me.

I guess we’ll see who gets a better contract next year. Hopefully Greer doesn’t face some huge rehab.

The team said he was a healthy scratch, so you can ask them if he was actually injured and they were just throwing him under the bus. His longest scratch was for 6 games (so 2-3 weeks).

My point is not that Greer is great. He's a 4th line guy who the Bruins waived and who has produced twice his best Bruins pace. Likewise Valimaki was sitting in Calgary and is a 4-5 guy for a fairly equally bad team, and who makes more than Greer. Of course, Valimaki was a first round pick whereas Greer is a 2nd rounder.

The point is that I'm not fussed about waiver releases or pickups. By definition they are expendable guys.

Players often need a change of pace too, like Vali wasn't even top 4 on the Wranglers and at 1.5 I can see why they waived him.

Great points. I don’t understand why folks get themselves in a lather whenever Valimaki is brought up. He happened to play 24 minutes in a game the other night. That gets mentioned and it’s followed by two pages of talk about how awful he is. And then some Greer tangent.

I mean maybe I missed it but is anybody actually saying Valimaki is a difference maker? He seems to be cheap depth (which is better than expensive depth).

And btw he is still very young. He would be the youngest defenseman on the Flames NHL roster.

The reason he is being discussed in this thread is that some people still lament losing him - presumably because he is some kind of difference maker, because otherwise, why mention him?

For me, turnover, and fresh starts, is part of the process. But some people remain butthurt over him.

Well he gets discussed because he was a high draft pick, once highly thought of, lost on waivers. It’s a little unusual and seems like that makes him worth following. Some rule now that if you bring up a player it means you lament losing him? I thought it was newsworthy when he was scratched and also newsworthy when he plays well. That’s all really.

There does seem to be a rule that if you bring up a player, certain posters will claim that losing him proves the Flames' management are idiots. This seems to be true of any former player, plus selected other players that the Flames could have drafted with a particular pick but didn't.
