Treliving played hardball with the RFAs to the point most of his RFA re-signings were trotted out as big wins for the organization, while the UFA re-signings were big losses.
Anyway, that bridge did, however, give him all the power in the world, and after Gaudreau left, he exercised that power. There were a tonne of posts in that signing thread that worried about it.
I think after Gaudreau left, it just helped push Tkachuk in that direction. Maybe he made up his mind after the covid seasons when he couldn't cross the border? Maybe he realized that Calgary needed another high-end player or two, not one less, and felt that the team was taking too big of a step back? Probably a combination of things, including being able to pick his spot. Heck, maybe Bennett got in his ear about how fun life was in Florida, and how the move was a huge breath of fresh air for him.
All I know is that he was willing to sign here originally long-term, was instead given a contract that made him a (for all intents and purposes) a UFA rather than an RFA, and he exercised that leverage to the maximum.

MT is all about the brand. He is about making the biggest buck he can. I dont think he cares if he wins a cup, he wants as much moola as he can grab in his career. My opinion.

Playing with a broken sternum is a pretty good brand isn't it? Of course he wants to win a cup.

The earlier we trade the UFAs or whoever players the better we would be. The team is at rock bottom regardless we have Tanev or Hanafin or Anderson or not. Acquire the future assets and lose the next 20 25 games will benefit this franchise long term.
The current roster is pretty painful to cheer for.

I find it remarkable that many of you had sp much optimism that you're just now jumping on the tank thread.
"They are who we thought they are."
"PLAYOFFS?!?"

Hey, you leave them alone. I'm having a wild time here. Not sure if I'm reading a supersized haiku or some kind of unfiltered inner monolog.
As others have said, this is probably when it should become clear as day that we aren't likely to sneak in. Hopefully there'll be some fruitful conversations over the break.

I really can’t see how management thinks a re-tool will work for this group? They need to trade ufas yesterday . Flames need best possible pick they can get. Keeping ufas longer could cost them a spot or 2 .

It wasn't like he gave it away. The puck comes around to the wing, Gudbranson gets a stick on it, and somehow CBJ outnumbers Huberdeau 3-1 on that side of the ice even though we have a PP. Lindholm, Kadri, and Sharangovich all standing still and don't move their feet at all even though we don't have possession.
And he was the only one that even really attempted to get back, Sharangovich should have been dropping back to support but didn't when we didn't have possession and still didn't hustle back as hard as Huberdeau did.
Easy to blame him on that play since he was closest to the puck but he was the only Flame on the ice that actually tried on that play.
|
Yeah, I didn’t see what else Huberdeau could do on that play. He was outmanned and somehow no one was open for an outlet, and no one covering back.

Calgary hasn't been keeping the UFA's so they can win.
The market for rental UFA's doesn't develop until closer to the deadline, when more teams will have the cap space to make acquisitions.

I rather have Monahan who is more productive right now
He rode Johnny, Tkachuk and even Monahan’s coattail for whatever real success he had. Totally overrated.
He is hurting not only his next contract but his trade value
Conroy will be left holding the bag if he expects anything more than a low first from a contender for this rental
Totally pathetic

This is what worries me about Lindholm’s trade value. He’s never elevated in the playoffs. And now in a contract year he’s playing like crap. The guy does not seem to respond well to pressure. Which won’t be lost on teams considering bringing him in for a playoff run.

While I don't think Lindholm is going to get the haul many seem to think, if a contender is eyeing him, it's because they already have a #1 center. Colorado, for example, won't have as much pressure on him, because McKinnon is the guy, and then Rantanen and Makar are all supposed to be better than Lindy.

Glad they sat Oesterle. When he was signed I was fine with it. As a 7 he'd be fine. Occasionally duty, etc. But once he was asked to play steadier minutes its been a disaster. Get Gilbert back in there, assuming he's fully healthy. Or make a call up.
As for Greer, my money is on the ol' high ankle sprain.

I think you’re kidding yourself if you think they haven’t been keeping them for hopes of squeezing into playoffs. I have no doubt in my mind that if flames were in a playoff position at deadline the only player they would trade is lindholm . They would re-sign hanifin and probably keep tanev signed or unsigned.
Bo horvat was traded at this time last year. Without looking things up I believe there are always deals happening around this time with teams wanting to get a jump on things.
For me the the best potential player we can get out of this years mess is calgarys own first round pick. It’s not going to be from late firsts and b prospects they get back in trade for ufas

I suppose it's going to come down to how the dominos fall near the deadline and how many teams will go all-in. It really does look like one of those years where the Stanley Cup is up for grabs so maybe there will be a bold franchise willing to make a big deal looking at this as their big chance. I'm bracing myself for disappointment in the case teams decide to sit on their hands and play hardball given the talks of the Flames not receiving great offers to date on their pending UFA's.

Wasn't even that nobody was open for an outlet...he never had possession of the puck and it was a loose puck.
And 3 CBJ PKers converged on the puck while Lindholm, Kadri, and Sharangovich didn't take a single stride to support and were all just watching.
Maybe you'd hope Huberdeau could have won that battle but I don't blame his effort on that play at all, he was the only one that even tried while 3 other guys just stood around.

That was a rough game… not much else to post but that.
The only positive is how insane Weegar has played. Glad to have him on the contract we signed.

I don’t feel bad for Roslovic on the hit by Huberdeau. His dirty hit on Weegar made him a target.
