To Flames: 2025 first-round pick, 2024 third-round pick, Seamus Casey, Vitek Vanecek/Akira Schmid
might not work for Calgary, but a realistic alternative :
To Devils: Jacob Markstrom, Chris Tanev
To Flames: 2024 second-round pick, Alex Holtz, Vitek Vanecek
might work, as Jersey gets their full 'ask'. Calgary takes the more expensive goalie and a lesser pick for the prospect with a higher ceiling. Everyone wins?

No where near enough, IMO. Leave the 1st and 3rd (and the cap dump), and insert Holtz for Casey, and it's reasonable.

With this schwindt call up it just feels like the Flames are finally ready to make the trades. Just a little internal scouting g to see if the can fill holes from within.

Obviously Lindholm is the better player over Monahan and will rightly demand more. The question is how much of a premium are teams willing to pay for that?
The assumption that he commands a huge premium because he's not getting dealt as a rental is a faulty one. That only works if the team can afford him next season and the team/player both feel like they're on the same page regarding what a contract would look like.
It would be really tight for teams like the jets, canucks and avs to re-sign him next season. They would have to be willing to part from other key roster players to fit him in.

Agreed. This is his last contract. He is going to free agency. So he’s a rental.
He’ll be a depth add for a cup run. So will Sean.
IMO they can each centre a 3rd line. Sean’s number this year say he does it better than Elias. For a rental you look at recency.
CGY and MTL are addressing same market. This is not ideal.
<s>Let’s continue to wait, maybe another good centre rental will become available.</s>

You are looking at a very select number.
Linholm is light year's better than Monny, and (pretty much) everyone knows it.
Monny will be loked as somoen who can help on the PP/
Lindholm will be looked as someone who can help a contender's second line and possible shut down another teams top line.

A large portion of fans seemingly have no ability to analyze a player past their most recent performance. Listen, I have been frustrated as all hell will Lindholm this year as well, but to just ignore what he has accomplished over the past five years here, and only focus on a half seasons worth of play is so disingenuous to the player he is, and has become. Even last year many were down on him since he wasn't a "point per game" center, but his analytics were still high end and he carried around Dillon Dube and Tyler Toffoli to career high seasons. His play this year may hurt his value ever so slightly, but I am willing to bet it's close to a non factor. He's a proven talent in this league. GM's don't hyperfocus on small sample sizes. In fact Giroux and ROR are perfect examples of these acquisitions turning their seasons around after a change of scenery.
|
I think Lindholm will fetch a 1st and maybe a little something
But his resume is nowhere close to Giroux or ROR…

As underwhelming as Lindholm has been this year - his lack of production is almost entirely tied to him having a down year in terms of finishing ability. He's shooting at just 6.5% this season, despite his career average in a flames uniform heading into this year being 15.26%. That's an 11 goal difference on averages to this point in the season which would put him at 19 goals and 41 points through 46 games.

Lindholm isn’t getting the juicy setups in his wheelhouse like in the past. It’s no coincidence his goal totals are down.

You think a contender needs him in the top six? That’s a hot homer take IMO.
He’ll be there for depth barring injuries to better players that made those teams contenders. Lindholm is not an upgrade to the 1C or 2C on contending teams.
Unless a team over pays, he is not signing an extension. So he’s a rental.
If I had to guess, the holdup on this trade is an extension because Flames want max value in trade. But it’s not happening.

Fans are so quick to turn on guys. Lindholms having an off year and is on pace for 53 points, while also being a great defensive centre man. Take any good two way center in the league that puts up 55 points every year and they’re extremely valuable. Now consider that this is an off year for Lindholm and he should be good for at least 65 points per season. GMs aren’t dumb enough to base him off a 46 game sample size. If anything some teams may be more enticed to bring him in and be able to extend him at cheaper than what he would’ve been going for in the summer.

I think the team that signs him will see it that way.
But this trade window, no way barring injuries.
Those contenders have chemistry and better performers this season. He’ll be there as depth.

It’s not about ‘is he good.’ Of course he is.
It’s about ‘what is he worth to a contender as a late season rental/depth add.’
Contenders already have a guy like Lindholm. He’s going there to cover if that person gets hurt, or to elevate the 3rd line. That’s just facts.

It's not that hot, hell I'm not sure I'd even really call it a warm take...
Pavel Zacha
Teddy Blueger
Mika Zibanejad
Vladislav Namestnikov
Ross Colton
... other then Zibanejad are you really saying that Lindholm is indisputably a worse option then the other 4 (presumptive 2C on surefire contending teams)? If you are then that seems like more of a hot take to me.

Tell me who is ahead of him on the Avs, Bruins, Hurricanes and the Jets? All of those teams he has been linked to at some point in the rumour mill this season.

Contenders?
He's an upgrade on Johansen in Colorado.
He's an upgrade on Kotkaniemi in Carolina.
He's a massive upgrade on Pius Suter in Vancouver.
He easily slots in at 2c behind Scheifele in Winnipeg.
He's a distinct upgrade on Zacha and Coyle in Boston.
Teams who may want to add a long term piece?
He's easily a 2c in Philadelphia
He's easily a 1C in Washington
He's easily a top 2C in Minnesota
He'd easily be a 2C in Detroit.
He'd easily be a 2C in St. Louis
Not everyone who dawns a Flames jersey is a heaping pile of garbage - Additionally he is versatile and can play on the wing in any teams top six in the NHL.

Maybe Toronto and Edmonton are the only two teams with 2 better centremen than him. And that’s assuming if Edmonton were to have lindholm that they’d not move drai and McDavid to the same line (flames would never trade him there though so doesn’t matter)

Spoke to my Sharks source. Couture is wanting to stay in San Jose and Sharks are respecting that. They haven't approached Hertl yet but if Hertl wanted out they would accommodate that.
