It's far from sterile. Earl's is sterile. Schanks is not.
Don't find it cold. Love the big open size. The food is quite good pub grub and I'm picky AF.
It can be empty, but I kind of like that as a non-sports guy. I had lunch there on Saturday or Sunday and there was a football game that seemed to be important? Not sure what that was about, but it was quite busy. When busy, though, you still have elbow room and can relax. The acoustics are great, too, probably owing to its size or something, but there isn't a loud din like in the places I consider to be sterile (like Earl's).
And boring? Dude, it has an arcade, pool tables and golf simulators. It's the least boring place of anywhere in Calgary if you want to move around and do stuff versus hanging out with your friends at a table.
But I'm not a shill for it or anything. I've just been a few times and really liked it. My turkey club on sour dough was awesome. The beef dip is really good. Things aren't greasy and nasty. It's good stuff, dude.
Yeah I love it too for birthdays, basically Chuck E. Cheese for adults. Did my birthday there quite a few years until I started hearing grumblings about switching it up lol. I need to go again, don't think I've gone since Covid

The greater the hunger and urgency, the better badder food tastes.
To point, you're ravenous and about halfway through a Subway (or some other mediocre fast food) and 0% tepid "beer" when suddenly your gut, brain, and taste buds all simultaneously say Meh.

I haven't been there in years, except for an office party in I think 2022 or maybe before the pandemic, it all rolls together.
It sucked.
Big
Empty
Cold
Food at the time was meh.
Place felt totally sterile and boring.

I've actually never enjoyed watching sports in a bar, it's too distracting.
Or I just like watching sports by myself in my bed. I watch too intensely.
That's 100% my opinion. It's one thing if it's a night out, or more of a social event. But I have some friends that pester me to go watch Premier League in the pub, have breakfast and all that. I constantly say no...I just want to watch the game!

Well...for starters the timing largely sucks, but if I were a Spurs fan and just knew that a humiliating loss was inevitably coming I wouldnt want to suffer that in public either.

I live watching games with a buddy.
Went to the pub to watch a lot of the RWC, by son came along as well.
The CRU is showing 6N this year and we will go to that as well.
What is the use of pontificating on the game and sharing vast knowledge on how players and coaches could do better all by myself.

By full arcade, you mean 4 Sega Rally cars with only one that works?
I laughed at this, accurate. It was also in my top 3 go to bars growing up, so many times there. I’m with Sliver on this one. I have a photo of the day they took down the old sign, with it laying on a trailer.

Schanks North circa 2006-2007 was f--king amazing, and I already reminisced about it back when they first closed due to COVID, before Schanks South was revived.
Schanks South is not a bad place. I live in the Beltline so it's a bit out of the way for me, but I've gone a couple times.

One of the games they were dying to get me out to was Liverpool earlier this year. You might not remember that one, but we won!
