Either losses are “acceptable” or you don’t really want a rebuild.

At this point I don’t know if you’re being deliberately obtuse or just truly don’t get it so I’ll spell it out for you:
The team should never feel content or take moral victories from losses to the oilers. I want players who hate to lose to them, because I as a fan hate losing to them.
This is true irrespective of the quality of the team. If we are rebuilding, I still want the players to hate losing to the oilers.
Your argument about the rebuild is non-sensical though, because it’d be impossible for them to get worse results than they’ve had since last October with this group of players. And there is no reason at this point to think it’ll get better absent a rebuild or re-tool.

A. No one has expressed contentment nor taken a moral victory. Nice straw man.
B. I'm not talking about players - I'm talking about fans. What player didn't hate that loss? But the fans had better get used to losing if they want a big rebuild. Wait until the team plays without Tanev, Lindholm and Hanifin (and maybe Markstrom as well).
C. There's plenty of ways for them to have had worse results since October. For example, they could have gone without a 4 game winning streak before the last couple close games. They could have had way more blowouts (I can't remember the last one).

A. You’re free to take a read through the first pages of the thread, no straw man there.
B. Based on the first period, where they got absolutely caved in, indicating lack of preparation, I’d say a number of the Flames players didn’t view the game as all that important. Their big boys have generally underperformed against the oilers which would be another thing to point to.
C. I was talking specifically about the Oilers. They’ve lost 4 straight, and haven’t been all that competitive even in games where the score was close. A rebuilding team literally couldn’t do worse.

Huberdeau is a pylon. He's gotta be Top 5 in the NHL for giveaways. 10.5 million.

He is not a pylon. He is just not worth 10.5 million.

Thought the players played a good game, they were in it all the way in the 3rd. The Flames have some new guys and are learning to be consistent. Reality is we lost a close game against a team that is on a mission to keep their streak going. Sometimes you have to lose to identify what you need plus, we have new guys coming in who might prove to be difference makers. The guys played hard and came up short. lLet's gave them a break and the organization more time to figure things out. Not one guy in that dressing room wanted to lose that game, they kept it close and tried to play to their strengths. I think as fans we can be a little too hard, especially as we have the luxury to see every little detail on screen.
Pretty sure the guys hated to lose that one, but losses can highlight that there is more work to be done.

I wasn’t talking about the Oilers. I was talking about the silly use of “unacceptable”. And I think you need to look up what “literally” means as well.
But I see you have some sort of insider knowledge about how the Flames viewed the game. Ever occur to you that the Flames gripped the stick a little too hard because they took it to be an important game? The Oilers “big boys” did nothing all game. I guess they took it lightly?
The chances in this game weren’t quite even, but the fact remains that they were a fluke goal one way and an exploding stick the other away from winning.

If your only point here is that you’re unhappy with my use of unacceptable (or literally, my deepest apologies) then let’s move on.
However, I’ll offer you the option of engaging with my actual point, which is that the Flames should foster a culture where the players hate losing to the Oilers.
First of all, it endears them to the fans, who also hate the oilers. Good for fan engagement and therefore business. Second of all, the Flames are going nowhere if they aren’t the best team in this province.
If we can agree on that, then we debate whether this group checks those boxes. I’d say no based on their performance the last two seasons. No inside knowledge required for the preparation comment, just repeated coaches quotes over the last two years that poor starts are the result of poor preparation. My view is that they haven’t shown a lot of desperation or emotional engagement in their losses in the post Tkachuk era either. Disagree with that if you will.

Maybe in an alternative universe we are talking about how Huberdeau put the team on his back and willed a victory over our most hated rivals.
He is definitely playing better however in this reality.

Just watched the game on the PVR. The effort was there. Big difference in offensive skill level obviously. The flames need a few lucky Kucherov / Point drafts if they aren’t going to tank.

So an Oiler team that just barely beat the Flames with a lucky bounce for 13 in a row gets vaulted to #1 Rank in Power Rankings by TSN...

Wow, they must think highly of the Flames for that to be the hurdle that pushes them to #1.
