I would be happy with Pinto or Greig, both excellent young players.

Friedman made similar comments today on 32 thoughts saying the Leafs are starting to think long term and not so much about this year.

Only mentioning this because they keep being brought up here as a suitor for Tanev or one of our goalies. Doesn't seem likely. Remember they couldn't even match Vancouver's modest offer for Zadorov and wanted retention. They really can't do anything and Treliving doesn't utilize the deadline anyway.
Smart IMO, their time isn't now. They are probably best off to build until Taveres comes off the books.

I do think he’s right that the Flames will use the picks from selling their UFAs to target prospects and younger roster players.
That's my thinking, trying to get a player in season from a team that has aspirations to compete is pretty difficult. But teams will part with picks and conditional picks.

But on draft day, there typically is some more enticing players that can be acquired. So wouldn't surprise me if the Flames settle for picks, than try to use those picks to find a new opportunity to get a player at the draft.

I think that you could move a guy like Coleman to open up a wing spot, eventually, but I wouldn't move him to give Dube/Ruzicka an increased role.
Yes, especially the bold part.

Boy the next 20 games are gonna be bumpy. There's a bit of a meat grinder in there. 14 games against playoff bound teams and some trap games like Chicago and Pitt and SJ and Sea.

Last game before the deadline is against Tampa on March the 7th, so 16 games remaining before then. Don't know if .500 hockey is do able in the stretch. But, they tore up the gauntlet they had earlier this year.

Ya Rids is exactly the kind of player we need. Young, Uber skilled and gritty Center man. Local kid with pedigree.

Oh hell no to Zegras. That is the Tkachuk situation all over again except he probably isn't doing us any favours.

I want full rebuild, so that's my plan. Sell when the older player has highest value and invest younger players.
I heard Kadri doesn't want to play for rebuilding team and Coleman may happy to go Dallas or LA as he wants to play for contender.
I just don't understand keep the older players who will not help to win but keep this team out off bottom.
We have Backlund, Huberdeau, who can help younger guys but may be untradeble.

Either one would be a solid grab at the right price.

Wonder what kind of price that would be. Not sure I would want to give up much more then a 20-32 1st rounder and maybe a b prospect

Lindholm for Pinto or Greig just feels like spinning the wheels. Those guys don't really profile to be any better than Lindholm is now.

but their ages fit better into the re-tool plan....any pick we make may not be any better either.

It solidifies the future as decidedly mid unless one of them has an extra level that we haven't seen a hint of at any point yet in their careers.

I think thats the plan. Get younger without losing too much ground.

Nit what I would do but it seems like that's the organizational prerogative.

If you're not gaining any ground though then you're not even a lock to make the playoffs most years, let alone do anything meaningful. Just seems pointless.

Greig would be interesting.

He's in a 45 point per 82 game pace this season, with 15 of 17 points being at 5v5 and he's only 21 years old.

If you end up with 3 firsts for the 3 UFAs I'd be fine with flipping the worst one for him.

He's very comparable to Zary or Pelletier but younger than both of them (almost a full year younger than Zary even though it's the same draft).

Getting him for just a late 1st would probably be a great trade.

I agree. Not sure the organization does though.

I bet they're hoping that a different mix and some developmental spikes will put them in a playoff spot more often then not.

It feels like they're okay being a 14-20 team in the league season to season.

Wait
You’re thinking it should be easy to trade our older UFAs for younger better players?

No. Trade them for picks and make the picks. Make as many picks as you can, especially in the first round.
