It seems to me that all this means is that we aren't trading Markstrom, which weirdly, everyone seems to agree.
Vladar for a (low) second. Go get it.

Markstom also chose the Flames as the #1 FA goalie on the market...you don't just ask him to waive his clause for F all return

Everyone is entitled to post their opinions.
Some called it pessimistic. Others call it realistic.
Everyone has a line.
I would love to get a hughes for markstrom. NJD need a goalie. It's fair to say that's not realistic and frankly it's so unrealistic that it's boring to talk about.
In the same vein I dont think Nemec or mercer are realistic targets for Markstrom.
Conroy is free to ask for whatever he wants and he probably won't move Markstorm unless it was a ridiculous overpay like that. I would also be ecstatic.

His "realistic" discussion is
"Less than Horvat"
Let's see
Seems Tofolli got a younger cheaper and dare I say currently better player and a pick

It's not pessimism. It's looking at the history of trades, the current climate for trades, the current cap conditions, the long-term behaviors of the team, and seeing how they stack up in comparison to some of the suggestions. Instead, I always ask for people to explain the how and the why behind their suggestions, to show other deals that support such expectations, and then weigh that with the Flames behaviors as an organization. That isn't pessimism, that is trying to understand the insanity.

They are a similar caliber of player, horvat was younger and was having a career year well ocer a PPG. We also probably wont get a 1st as low as 17th oa. So I think there's a fair argument that we will get around that return and maybe a bit lower.
I'd love to get:
Mercer+holtz+1st for markstrom + hanifin
And
Byram+1st for lindholm
Rebuild is over. But common... seriously?

I agree that this is what management is thinking.
They won't trade Marky unless it was a massive offer they couldn't refuse.
Which is why it's extremly unlikely he will be traded.
I dont see NJD being willing to trade nemec or mercer for markstrom.

So trading Markstrom means largely giving up this season and less chance of competing next season. So the price has to be worth it for that. And it probably isn't.
I realize that is counter to the desire for a full re-build, but we have no indication of the club doing that. So giving up their established #1 isn't easy. I suspect that the gap between the price they would need and what they can get is big. And won't be bridged.
|
Yeah. And that’s a bit of an issue with me. The compete window is probably three four years down the line. Denying that without a star is a management mistake for a long time. It’s not you, it’s their half way approach that is aggravating. Conroy’s gotta work that phone with Murray to maximize his assets to get good picks.

New Jersey apparently looking at Gibson. Could be a decent buy low option as well

Markstrom seems happy here, a stabilizing player who wants to win. Would have to be a pretty big ask to ask a player like that to wave. We are better off within as part of the core.

It only won't be 17th overall because it will likely be a better team...nothing to do with value of Lindholm vs. Horvat

What a tedious direction this thread has taken. I would avoid it but it keeps sitting at the top of the page as if Marky was about to be moved.

Yes, you can post an opinion. Calling it “realism” implies that you have the monopoly on the truth - what’s “real”.
You know what’s not realism? Saying that Hughes for Markstrom is a comparable for Nemec or Mercer for Markstrom.

It’s funny but from Conroy saying he won’t trade him unless he gets an offer that blows off his socks, would probably be two first rounders from his point of view. Well, what GM would do that with his recent history? And if teams currently are calling up offering a first plus a bit is that not a good if not great offer? And why do we have to keep him? For what future if this a rebuilding team? I just find the whole thing odd. Don’t get me wrong, Conroy should shoot for the moon but IMO if you can get a first for someone with uncertainty, isn’t part of the long term when you’re ready to compete, and probably won’t have a higher value than now, you take it.
|
I think this is just posturing by Conroy, if you really wanted to keep markstrom, you would just say "not for sale"...if the intell is correct and he would only be trading him if there was a great offer ..it just tells me they are prepared to trade him, they're just asking for "the moon" so that they can accomplish their goal of a "reasonable" return for trading their starting goaltender..

When has Conroy said anything at all about it? Why should he? All this talk is coming from the media.
