People make mistakes. Not you of course but everyone else.

Was responding in jest to earlier posts. Didn't read yours until after the fact.

Unfortunate story. Hate to hear about people being victimized that way.

At the same time.. chill.

Sure, don't trust a random call like that, but as jar_e posted, you can call the non-emergency line and verify it's a real officer calling. Don't just assume it's fake and be rude to a cop.

I am going to assume every unknown caller is up to no good. Have you ever got a random phone call that was legit, awesome news?

If you have enough awareness that people make mistakes, you probably have enough to avoid being a dick and calling someone “not very bright” because they ask a question.

Don’t assume it’s fake, but also hang up and call the non-emergency line to verify that it’s not fake?

Sorry, it’s hard to tell whether you’re being serious sometimes or whether it’s a bit, and I honestly couldn’t figure out where to place “I never trust a phone call EVER!” Apologies that this is a super serious real person concern for you, I just answer and make phone calls like a normal person.

They're obligated to give their badge number upon request up here right?

Or am I in fictionville again (I don't have enough regular run-ins with authorities let alone ones where I question their legitimacy).

I dunno. I think as you mature, you become conditioned to the fact that any incoming phone call without a caller id is either a scam or a telemarketer of some kind.

90% of the time it’s Telus trying to sell me their security package.

But, you know… I trust that it’s Telus trying to sell me their security package.

I was not pulled over today. I didn’t drive anywhere though, so that may have something to do with it.

But AI

If the Indian scammers wield its power your recently deceased grandma could call you out of the blue to urgently request that you go buy a dozen gift cards from circle-K and tell her the pins because its really important.

We can never be too trusting with AI out there.

People call your private number wanting to give you money? I want in on that!

Speaking of AI a client of mine got one of those voice clone calls, her grandson was in some distant city etc. she really thought it was him. I want to know how the scammer obtained voice recordings, and knew exactly who to call.

If I see a number I don't recognize I let it go to voicemail. If it's important they'll leave a message. If so i'll call back. Does that make me not normal?

Granny’s Facebook gets hacked. They pull her phone number out of the profile. They find a grandchild in the friends list. They find a video on social that the grandchild posted and need only a few seconds of speech from them to generate the voice. They call Granny pretending to be that grandchild.

Scammers are getting good at using numbers from your area to make the call look legit. A quick google search often shows it to be a scam.

Damn too easy. And sad, some people lose a boat load of money.

I guess I can say this now because he passed on, one of my uncles fell for the Nigerian scam. Yes that one.

Seems like he would have had to go faster than 110kph to catch up from first observing you, then getting the phone, having a brief conversation with your wife and then finally pulling you over.

Almost sounds like he was speeding and distracted driving just to catch up to somebody going the speed limit.
He called her almost immediately after I passed them, which was approx 12km before where he actually pulled me over. I was definitely cognisant that I passed two police units and once I did, they seemed to keep the same speed and did not keep up with me.
